Second stage foods involve food combinations, so you want to have thoroughly tried the stage 1 foods to insure your child has no allergic reactions. Read the ingredients label on 2nd stage foods very carefully and as with introducing any new foods ....introduce and wait 3 days before introducing anything else that is new. I started on stage 2 when my son was 6 months old.

PS- If volume of food is the issue, you can give your baby two jars of stage 1 at any given feeding.

Seems like there isnt any difference between the 1st and the 2nd stage foods except the 2nd has food combined. And the tubs are bigger. I say when your child is ready to eat more per feeding and ready to try food combinations, start the 2nd foods.
My 6 1/2 still eats stage 1, I plan on starting her on the stage 2 in maybe a month or so. It's really whenver you think shes ready or whenever you want.
