By that I mean what music group did you first get into as a child that you weren’t previously exposed to by a parent, brother or sister? For example: my parents enjoyed Pink Floyd which I eventually ended up enjoying too and soon found myself owning several albums of, but when I got into high school I started listening to...? (I won’t tell you until later because I’ll be dating myself and I’m slightly embarrassed)

What was it that you most related to or enjoyed most about the album (was it the cover art or some song you heard)? Did you buy it because of peer pressure from your friends? What memories do you associate with it now if/when you happen to hear it again?

I have always been a HUGE Queen fan. I remember in 8th grade I bought their album without my parents permission... it was so awesome. But then my mother took it from me and threw it away... she told me not to listen to that kind of music. What?! I know! So sure enough, I bought it again... Lol. Another one bites the dust. Lol. I always have Freddie Mercury on my computer at work-when I feel blue I just put it on and though everyone curses me at work for playing Queen-It makes me so happy! Wish I was born in the 70's. Lol.

The first CD I bought was Blur's self titled album. I originally bought it because my brother was a massive Oasis fan and I wanted to irritate him by playing the band's biggest rivals. I really enjoyed the music, although over time I have been listening to them less and less as I find other groups and have developed a more diverse taste in music. Interestingly, Damon Albarn has become one of the country's most accomplished musicians and formed new bands (Gorrilaz, The Good, The Bad and The Queen) which have appealed to me as my attitude to music changes.

The first cassette tape I bought for myself was Too $hort's, "Short Dog's in the House". It had a sick cartoon cover that attracted me, a pre-cursor to Snoop's first album cover. The very first CD I ever bought (back when CD's came in that card board box which was twice the size of the CD) was N.W.A.'s, "EFIL4ZAGGIN" or "NIGGAZ4LIFE". I bought it because I had the money, and I knew my parents wouldn't buy it for me. "She Swallowed It" was the song that made me want to buy it. Both albums remind me of how the late 80's, early 90's were. They bring me back to my discovery of personal identity and social awareness. Pimpin' and Bangin'. The West Coast Cali Life.

Jimmy Needham. He was a relatively new contemporary Christian singer at the time and nobody I knew had ever heard of him - but he looked interesting so I went out on a limb and got his CD "Speak." I will never regret it! I find it convicting, enjoyable and upbeat.
