This is very interesting, because a good friend of mine is trying to open an anime store too. We know this store that sells anime, anime music, and other asian films. They've already established a name and business, but my friend would like to open a store with the same name but in a different location. He spoke with the owner to inquire if he was interested in franchising. Once he gains permission to use the name he wants to rent retail space in the downtown area. There are no video game, or anime stores downtown, and he figures he could sell cool asian media to flocks of kids that hang out downtown after school. Plus there are always traveling teenagers there because of our convention center and the wealth of hotels. 1st thing to do is plan a location, 2nd thing is to search for rentable retail space, and 3rd you either need to fund the rent and furnishing supplies yourself, or consruct an awesome business proposal and present it to banks/investors that could give you a small business loan. Beyond that you'll need lots of other business related things, like distributors, insurance, permits/licenses, furnishings, employees, tax papers, etc..Then you should be set. You don't need any kind of degree to open a small business, but you do need to present your proposal like you know what you'redoing. Confidence wins everytime regardless if you have that silly piece of paper or not.

I agree that you should watch Gurren Lagann, because it is so full of awsome. Spice and Wolf is good as well; Season one was only 13 episodes and is deceptively good for an anime dealing with economics (I could be biased though; economics classes were some of my favorite classes in college. X3). 1). What old school anime is your ultimate favorite? why? Saber Marionette J, because Lime is so cute! Or Ronin Warriors, because it was my first and fegging awesome. 2). Are there many anime fans around you or are you a lone fan? I'm like proverbial the lightbulb on the front porch of the world. I first turned on to anime, not to many otakus around, but the longer the light stayed on the more that swarmed. 3). For those of you who buy anime, what is the best store to purchase from in your opinion? I buy once in awhile usually from rightstuf, movie stop, or anywhere that sells used DVDs. 4). What do you think of people who just buy anime or watch it on television? They're missing out on half the fun, lots of good shows you have to wait to be butchered by dubbing before you can see them. BUT whatever floats you boat. 5). How many channels did anime air on during five years ago and how many channels are airing it now? (please exclude the 24hr anime channels). I know it airs on cartoon network, the action channel, and I know it did air on techTV before it merged with G4 and a little after, but I don't have sattelite anymore, so I'm not sure if it still does. . .

Degree requirement: None, zilch, nada...
Time and money is all you need...Lotsa both.
You will need to have some suppliers lined-up, some manegerial and purchasing skills would be handy, as would people book-keeping, and "boss" skills.
If you are absolutely going to insist on a degree, CGA/CPA, BBA or MBA would help, although in the last two, the amount of "whatever" or inapplicable skills would be considerably higher, since they deal more with "large" concerns, not smaller stores.
You'd be better off finding a job in retail and work your way up to Management to learn the ropes before going it on your own.
Oh, and incidentally...do some research to see if there would be a market in the area before you loose your shirt, slacks, shoes, and about everything you own.

a degree in business administration would be ideal (since you're already in college)
marketing, and adv majors could help too
all you really need is money :) lots and lots of money...
just keep one thing in mind. while there are alot of otakus out there.. they make up a very small percentage of the population.. so you want to make your store accordingly..
