Getting ready for work (lived in Seattle). I remember thinking what a horrible accident (because only the one plane had hit the towers at that point) and then was watching the live broadcast when the second plane hit. That's when I realized that it was not an accident and was just in shock wondering what else was going to happen.

I was on a business trip in Pittsburgh. My family was in NY.

With the airports closed and all the bridges and tunnels closed in NY. I was trapped.

When I was able to get a flight a week later, the plane flew directy over ground zero on it's way into La Guardia airport.

The smoke was still rising.

There was absolute silence on the plane.

My neighbor, 10 years earlier, lost her husband in a house fire.
She had just re-married. Just got back from her honeymoon. Her new husband was on the second day of his new job in Tower one. He was killed instantly when the plane hit.
She has since moved away. No one knows where.
Her sister adopted the two children she could no longer cope with caring for.

I was at home on the Internet. Some folks in a local AOL chat room were fusing about it, so I turned on the news. I don't think I fully understood the impact, or implications at the time. I watched an emotional documentary about it recently, and understood more of how it was a real tragedy.

I was at work in Midtown Manhattan. A coworker called in to say she couldn't get in because people were flying planes into the towers. We turned on the radio (no TV) and started hearing about what was happening. All we could see from where we were was the smoke filling the sky downtown. I realized then that we must have been in one of the few places in the city to not be able to see the towers themselves. My wife saw the second hit from her office window. I don't remember how long until my bank decided to close. My wife walked about 20 blocks to get to me. I then remember the surreal scene of walking down a car-free Lexington Avenue to get to a friend's apartment where we watched the news and waited to hear that trains were running out of Penn Station. We were lucky to get on the first train out, jammed full of silent people. I often think that must have been like the people on the helicopters at the fall of Saigon must have felt.

I started the day off about 36,000 feet above the Atlantic flying to work in Europe. Because of the five hour difference in time, I had already landed and had just gotten to work when everything started happening.

Sitting in a resort on a diving trip to Thailand - I had just turned on CNBC to get the morning stock report - it was exactly 12 hours earlier in NYC. I stayed up all night and watched the sun come up still in shock.

I drive truck - I was delivering food to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo MI. I heard about it and went to the dining hall to see the TV.
I remember seeing several middle eastern students at that time who suddenly looked different to a lot of people.

It was a definite line of demarcation in all our lives.

returning a rental car mine had the engine replaced and when i walked in everyone was around the TV in the rental place and i was like hello then they looked at me and i couldn't believe it . i picked up my car and the radio was on and everyone was glued to it that's when i heard about the second plane and then a 3'rd and it felt strange and eerie.
like some weird battle began .
i called all my family to find out where they were and got a rifle ready in case we were being attacked
i wanted to go fight where ever we were needed . now it sounds silly but everyone was wired at that time .,
and if it came to it im glad i have a rifle.
id join a state guard or militia and fight where ever needed
