The main brands will always give you better quality and should last longer.

To be honest, dell are OK but mass produced and the customer services can be a little dodgy. From what i can recall you can only get spare parts including Ink Cartridges from Dell which are also expensive.

Toshiba are making some good laptops, Acer are a good value bet which we use at work and have never had any issues or if you want to spend a bit more then get a sony, I have one and its always been great.

Easiest thing is to go to PC World or Comet unless you have a good local specialist but avoid the cheap and cheerful brands as you get what you pay for !

LouLou:

The only thing I can offer is a negative. I own a Compaq desktop. It is the LAST Compaq I will ever buy for myself or recommend to anyone inquiring about a computer.

FYI, I have had exceptional service out of HP printers. Based on that I will probably go with an HP in the future. I will do a lot of checking first though. I understand HP has acquired Compaq in some sort of a merger.

Dells are really not good. They advertise well and are very user friendly, but are very restrictive and tend to break down very easily.

Acers are even worse. They are bulky and heavy, and overheat very easily.

I'm currently on a borrowed Gateway laptop, and I like it alot better than the ones I have used in the past. It has the full keyboard, complete wiht the number board on the right. It's a bit heavy, but it's also old.

My top recommendation would be a MacBook, but you would probably have to find a used one (eBay) to find one that isn't pricey.

I have an Acer tavelmate 240 and it is the best computer i have ever owned. At 2.40 Ghz (the one in the link is 2.6Ghz) Its quicker than most laptops on the market. You can also upgrade the ram really easily and it supports up to 2 GB. I've had a dell PC and its the first and last Dell i'll ever own; ive had nothing but trouble from it. Same goes for my girlfriends Packard Bell.

PC Magazine really fell in love with Dell, but the one they reviewed (November 6 issue) was a really pricey model...you might look at that issue of the mag for a few reviews of reliable PCs...

PC Mag and Consumer Reports have always favored, in this order (but maybe they're bang for $$$): IBM, HP, Toshiba, Acer...

I have a dell and have never had a problem. I know people who go through so many laptops because of malfunctions. Go with dell. Their affordable too. :)
I will only ever buy dells.

The person above doesn't know what they are talking about. I called their customer service before for advice on how to add RAM and they were so helpful. I didn't wait forever and they were nice.

Some folks like Dell, I ain't one of them. My preference is an Apple by Mac. You don't have to buy a new one. In fact, I recently acquired a reconditioned computer which is stronger and better than one purchased by a friend of mine at a much larger cost.

Go for a Mac. Little more expensive but so hasstle free! No virus, everything just works, you don't need to fiddle with firewalls or anything, it's all just there. Nice and simple like.
Also, you get to speak to nice helpful people on the phone (not insinuating that people in India arn't nice but I would prefur to speak to someone that understnads what I'm saying) and they do huge discounts for students.
