No one had invented the electric chair or lethal injections yet. You are correct that the common conception of God zapping people is probably incorrect. It appears that God allows natural events to take place, volcanos, floods, animal attacks, bites, diseases, etc. On extremely rare occasions it does appear that God intervenes either using these natural events for his own purpose or staying them.
