I would have to agree with you. More than that though it is a show of power, and a way to reproduce as many sons as one possibly can to increase the size of the family. In olden days it was a show of wealth. I think it is gross as well, but to each their own.

If my husband were to marry another one, I would be so angry I think I might just cut off his head. Well, not really. I would be absolutely heartbroken, depressed even. I would feel that I am not good enough. But think on the men's side...
In Islam, if a man marries more than one, he has to treat each wife equally. If one wife has a car, the other 2 or 3 must have the same car. He has to give each wife the same amount of money, the same amount of love, affection and treatment. Most men think that one wife is already a handful, you have got to hand it to a man who is able to handle 3, 4 wives. I bet he goes through more heartache and headache. Marrying more than one is not always about sex, unless if that is what you always think about. I would be really really really upset if my husband had to marry another one, but if that other woman is someone who is worth respecting, caring and loving for then I hope I will have the strength to be able to share my husband with another woman.
If a woman were to have multiple husbands, and if she gets pregnant, how would one know who is the father? Yes, there are such things like DNA testings these days but seriously, would you really take the trouble?

The custom for multiple wives come when most cultures were farm or labor intensive. The more children you had, the more workers you had. So by having multiple wives, you could increase the number of children/workers in your family.
Plus death in war for males was so common, that often women outnumbered men 3 or 4 to one. Since women could not hold a job or own propety, if they did not marry, they straved. So they were willing to be the second, third, or more wife just to survive.
Often the other wives only saw the man when they were ready for another child. He would be with them just long enough to "do the deed", and then be gone. They received food, clothe, shelther and protection in exchange for an occasional needed baby.

I don't agree with multiple wives either and don't really understand it. I've seen interviews with people who live in this situation. The women talk about how they like the camaraderie of the other women and like having the additional help with the children. To me it seems like the only one really winning is the man-he must get one major ego trip. I don't see a woman wanting to live in this situation unless she grew up in this type of household, and thinking therefore it's okay. Are there ever situations when a wife can have multiple husbands? I've never heard of it.

Well, its a cultural thing, so although I don't personally want anything to do with it, I don't judge it because its not in my culture. Marriage is different to different people. Its also more than sex to some people. Because even though your getting sex from all of them( I assuming bc I don't know) you may be getting something or giving something as equally important to you and the other parties involved

I agree.
Men who are proponents of polygamy often cite lofty sounding reasons for it, but when it comes right down to it, its all about sex. The only explanation that I can think of as to why some women subject themselves to that is this --- they have been brainwashed. They belong to some form of religious cult, and they are isolated from the rest of the world.

Sorry Valerie but in the US is it is not legal it is just not on the front pages nor persued unless minors are involved in the Patrimony. there are folks for instance in a town in Utah that believe they are allowed by Gods law so they break another of Gods laws to feel good about it. They also hide it. This is yet another of Gods laws and thinkings about secret societies.
Ya they are perverts.... Oh me bad!

Some women do accept that, especially in the Mormon religion. Its not something that most women would accept unless they had been raised t hat way. Its not fair to women at all.

In some cultures, though, it has just become a tradition, and if a man were to only have one wife, he could be said to be trying to forget tradition.
I think you are right, though, about the sex. I think that's how it started out.

I feel the same way. However, I don't think the cultures that allow more than one wife see it that way. They're looking at procreation....carrying on the family name. Good question though!
