I never thought this, but some of the left sure gave this belief some validity. First, the loudest of the left are more concerned with teh lives of those who want to kill and torture our civilians than the lives of unborn children. Im sorry, but this is ridiculous regardless of the patriotism debate.
Second, the left media (especially CNN) really promote and emphasize how many of our soldiers our dying. I hate that they are dying, but compare these numbers to any other war, they are being exaggerated for effect. But how much does CNN talk about all the good we are doing in Iraq? From teh soldiers (not Hillary Clintons or Harry Reid's) point of view? It does seem as if CNN is doing its best to hurt our morale, and they are succeeding.
We had those idiots in Oregon burning an American flag and an effigy of Bush. This, although a very smal example, is certainly unpatriotic. Yet, burning an American flag, which symbolizes destroying America and its values, are defended by some lib lawyers and law-makers. I love freedom of speech, but this crosses the line. Yell out what you think, tell Bush to screw off or whatever, but if you indicate that you want to destroy our country or kill our President, its time for you to go.

My answer is not so simple.
Like most things in life, there are few absolutes (right/wrong, black/white, etc...).
Perhaps since 2000, when the presidential election was decided upon over some hanging chad, our nation has become very polarized.
You are either are a Republican or a Democrat.
A Red State or Blue State.
Liberal or Conservative.
Doesn't leave very much room for those of us in the middle...those shades of gray, if you will.
Shortly after 9/11, as we prepared to invade Afghanistan, President Bush issued the statement that you are either with us or against us.
Clearly, that statement was rightly targeted at all people and all nations in regards to global terrorism.
However, some on the far-right have taken that statement to mean if ANYONE criticizes the president or America, then they are the enemy.
So much for free speech.
However, to be sure, there are those on the far left who abuse their speech with hate-filled, anti-American words.
Ward Churchill comes to mind.
Sean Penn is another.
Cindy Sheehan certainly fits the bill.
These people have stepped over the line of just criticizing the president (as I also find Bush to be odious), to the point of condemning American values and freedoms.
I'm sure that they would be singing a different tune of they were living in Iran and tried to criticize President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Do I think that ALL people on the left are unpatriotic?
Hell, no.
Any more than I think that ALL people on the right are doing whats best for this country.

Wow ! Many screwed up people.
1. They don't hate America, they hate president Bush.
2. They think they are getting revenge for president Clinton being impeached.
3. They think it's payback for not stealing the 2000 election better than the Republicans did.
4. They would like to think that somehow this will allow themselves to recreate the "woodstock generation".
To sum up: if you can't identify radical Islam as our enemy then you are doomed to repeat history the way Chamberlain did before WWII. Political ideology is overtaking the logic of those less able to correctly assess the global struggle we're involved in.
See you in hell infidels!

To answer your question, these are just some of the main reasons reasons:
Issues like illegal immigration cause people to doubt if the left are out to help Americans fisrt?
Opposition to terrorism fighting tools such as the Patriot Act give the impression to many that the left cares more about criminals and terrorists than America.
The left also associates more with leaders of other countries who have professed hatred for America. Several liberal figures (celebrities, polititians, etc) have praised or even visited Anti-american leaders like Hugo Chavez in Venezuala.
I am not, however, advocating name calling. I think this does a disservice to the importance of the issues. But there are legitimate reasons behind the feeling that the left is not looking out for America first.

When they support things like the so called "Fairness Doctrine" to try to silence talk radio, when they criticize people for wearing a flag pin, when they refuse to stand or recite the pledge of allegiance, when they do their best to villify anyone that disagrees with them, when they call the President of the United States a chimp or a moron or undermine his duty as Commander-in-Chief while troops are under fire, when they see political advantage in losing a war, when they use the Supreme Court to decree something a "right" that they could never get the country to accept otherwise, when they refuse to enforce immigration laws, when they refuse to make English the official language, when they hold other cultures to be equal to or superior to our own, when they try to use the courts to subvert the election process, when they bash our Generals, when they turn a blind eye to corruption within their own ranks, when they try to repeal the Patriot Act, when they filibuster Presidential nominations, when they accuse our troops of being terrorists, when they claim the terrorists are "freedom fighters", when they see no difference between what our troops are trying to do and what the enemy is trying to do, when they claim that forbidding prayer is supporting freedom of religion, when they place a Crucifix in a Jar of urine and call it art, when they attack every institution that is part of the foundation of America, when they try to discredit the Founding Fathers, when they expose children to pornography, when they usurp parential rights, when they support all kinds of rights for the accused but not for the victims, when they campaign feverishly to free convicted cop killers, when they heap praise on tyrants like Fidel Castro, when they honor the United Nations above America, when they claim that only white people can be racist, when they claim only men can be sexist, when they are more concerned with child predators rights than childrens rights, I would say they bring it on themselves.

There are so many answers to that question....... =`(
It could be because of the fact that at anti-war rallies you see liberals stepping on the american flag, calling bush a Fascist, constantly insulting thier fellow Americans (Conservatives), and even publicly announcing that they're "not anti-american, they just hate america."
It could be because conservatives say anybody that goes against thier morals are "UnAmerican."
It could be because Conservative disinformants are succeeding in thier job to discredit the Left wing.
It could be because of the fact that some Left-wing beliefs are morally opposed to parts of the American Bill of Rights (1st and 2nd amendments)
OR it could be all of the above. /)`

If the Liberals were patriotic and loved America, why do all their candidates say that they want to bring about fundamental change?
These fundamentals have made us the most powerful, resilient, compassionate, generous, benevolent, dynamic, welcoming, educated, brilliant, productive society in the history of the world and got it done in a blink of an eye viewed in historical reference.
Why would they want to fundamentaly change it?
What is it that they hate so much that causes them to go on one irrational tirade after another proclaiming that it should be changed radically and they are the only ones who are equipped to do it.
Why are they so angry and depressed?
Historically speaking, we are in the best shape we have ever been in, what's the problem? Sure, there are problems but, are any so bad that we should trash the fundamentals that have got us this far? Why?
With all the insults and angry rhetoric I can only come to one conclusion, they hate the way America is and they want to create something different.
I say go ahead and create it, just don't do it here.

simple logical explanation;
many people in the USA are from other countries that are socialist/communistic , those people didn't like something there and moved here to the USA ..... but many of them still hold socialist views and raise their kids/grandkids to also want to have free social services of foods and health care.
many of those people don't have a history of fighting for america's freedoms, they don't understand that if we don't fight , maybe we could lose our government and our freedoms.
then there is the "other" groups of americans who come from backgrounds fighting physically for their rights.... they know that freedom isn't free, that it takes hard work and aggressive behavior to keep what is ours.
it's okay to help "others" with a helping hand, but don't over indulge and make "others" weak by giving too much for nothing. People need to work and earn self respect and pride and not blame anyone else for their own failures.
People who live in the USA and don't love our country are considered unpatriotic ... we know who most of them are, the welfare crowd and those who live off of others money .... I notice they are the most critical of our government.
Sure, cause they don't contribute, they don't have pride in self or anything

During the Weimar Republic, the "left" was blamed for Germany losing WWI and for the reparations in incrued due to the left being the main force behind Germany surrendering. The "right" saw them as unpatriotic because of this, and used it in propaganda against the left. Hitler and the Nazi party continued this thought.
The Bush administration from day one has set out to give the president more power. In order to rationalize this power, you have to have a reason, and nothing gives a president more power than a president during the war. It is during this time that the country is in a "state of emergency", when the president can over ride the legislative and judicial branches in order to do what is best for the country.
Basically the belief exists because there is fear, and when there is fear you always need to find the cause. Sometimes when the cause is found, people go beyond that and blame people who do not support the reaction to the cause (i.e. war).
The left is seen as a "threat" to a lot of people because the left represents change. The left has always been on the cutting edge of social movements, and many people see these social movements as threats to their morality.
If you want to change, it also means that you don't like how things are going now. If you don't like how things are going now, it means that you probably don't like the current government. And if you don't like the government, then you aren't patriotic because you aren't blindly following your government.
Make sense?

it is simple, both parties claim to support the troops. The republicans are failing to fund the va for ptsd, but the democrats are hoping for defeat to hang around the neck of GWB. They want Iraq to be over with when they take office in 2009. They constantly say "This war is lost" and are trying to make the president look bad. If you listen to the president of Iran or UBL, their message is the same as the libs, so yes they are weak, they hate america and want us to lose
