I was watchng the tv show Jail last night and they locked a girl up for being a material watness and I do not know what that is.

A material witness is a witness whose testimony is not only relevant to the matter in issue, but also without which the matter amy not be resolved. The government may hold a material witness, whether the victim or an eyewitness, against his or her will in order to insure his or her presence at trial. 18 U.S.C. Section 3144.

Material means the person has knowledge of the case. The other type of witness is a character witness. Experts who testify are called witnesses as well.

So a material witness is someone who has information relating to the case in mention
