Presently running a 6 year old 1Ghz system. Newer systems run much faster?

I guess there are ways, but, you would need a newer MOBO to swap out. You not say what this is; Acer? Dell? But, for what you may pay and the work involved it may be cheaper to just buy another Laptop.

Typically laptops are not very upgradeable. You may (emphasis on may) be able to upgrade the processor within the range of processors that were offered with the PC when it was sold. You may also be able to upgrade the RAM inexpensively. Beyond that, there is a chance that you could find another, newer mother board that fits the exact form factor of your case, but it would typically be cost prohibitive and more dangerous to the health of the PC than just upgrading the entire unit. In the end, you would only be saving the cost of the screen, and LCD prices have plummeted reducing the cost of a lot of laptops.
