If you are going to your bank you will most likely need just a drivers license to cash it. However if you don't have the funds to match it they might require you to deposit it and have a hold put on it (gives the bank time to collect the funds) The hold is usually between 5-11 business days. This situation is if the check is not drawn off your bank.

If you go to the bank the check is drawn off of they will want two forms of ID. Drivers license and a passport or maybe your social security card. As long as one is goverment issued with a photo id.

What is the maximum amount of money that a personal check can be made out for?

Any amount

Can i just go to the bank and cash a 3,000 personal check?

If you have an account there, although they will probably put a hold on it between 1-3 weeks

Drivers license will be fine if you have an account at that bank.

If the state issued ID is current they should accept that, also drivers license or pass port. It PNC is not your bank then they don't have to cash your check at all and if you do have an account there they normally only ask for the last four digits of your social and your birth date to verify the account.
