tho colonial powers took over the farms, used the natives as slaves or low-paid workers. formerly they were small family farms or community tribal plots. then became modern large scientifically (for the time) operation mega-plantations

South Africa was virtually empty when the 'colonialists' arrived. The only inhabitants were the bushmen who were hunter gatherers. As Europeans arrived from the south, Bantu and other strong native people arrived from the north. Met in the middle. Problems. No pastoralists to be affected.
