If the grass is tall and thick the mower will overheat and shut down. This can cause serious internal damage to the engine of the mower.
Best idea is to raise the cutting deck by lowering the wheels. Some mowers have adjusters on all four wheels that allow you to adjust the cutting height. Other mowers have wheels that you have to unbolt and move down to the lower mounting holes where the wheel bolts on. Either way, make sure you adjust each wheel the same amount. Uneven adjustment will only increase your problem.
While you are at it, clean the bottom of the mower with a putty knife to remove any built up old grass cuttings. That will help also. Check the sharpness of blade while you are at it.
If all that doesn't completely solve the problem, try cutting your grass in stages with at least a half hour inbetween for the mower to cool down.

My guess, if the grass is high, its getting clogged up with the grass clippings underneath. Lift up the gaurd (where the grass blows out of) when it stops running and look and see if its open. When this happens to me, I push down on the handle so the bottom of the lawn mower comes up a bit every few feet to help get all the grass in there to come out. Also you may want to adjust the height of the wheels and do a once over on a higher setting and then go back over it at a lower setting. Good luck hope this helped.

If the grass is tall, your mower may not have the horepower to handle it. Go slowly, and mow a smaller width of grass, so the mower does not stall out.
Is your gas old? Put any remaining gas in the tank of your oldest car and buy a can of fresh gasoline. While you're up the street, consider buying an air filter, spark plug and a can of carburator cleaner. With the cost of gas, it's probably cheaper to make one trip than three.
Is air filter clogged? If so, replace.
Let engine cool, squirt a short spray of carburator cleaner in the air intake before you install the clean filter.
Still problems? Put in a new spark plug. Make sure the fuel line isn't plugged or kinked.
Still problems. Put in new points. You need a flywheel puller for this. At this point I personally would take it to the mower repair shop.
Please observe safety precautions.

The grass is too high for your mower and it does not have enough horsepower to cut through it. Raise the mower to the highest setting. Then if you mow more often then you can lower the setting.

You should mow more often. The thick grass is choking out the mower. Either raise the wheels or mow slower through the thick grass. Our mower dies if we go too quickly through thick grass.

if you're cutting high grass like you said it means you need to raise the level of the blade. there should be a lever on each wheel to raise it. when there's too much cut grass inside the dome of the blade it will slow down and "choke" itself out. when it sounds like it's going to die, lift up the front two wheels quickly. it will power back up. try weed eating high grass first then mow.

Check your spark plug at the front of the mower that it is not loose and is properly connected or maybe it needs replaced. Thats what happened to me. Good luck.
