How is buying a few houses and owning a business equal to becoming educated? These are entirely different things. Try this, get an education AND buy some real estate AND own a business.
Unless of course you mean that you believe the ONLY benefit of going to college is to make money. In that case, going to college may indeed be a waste of time for you.
Honestly, I think there are far too many people in college that think the purpose of a higher education is to qualify for a job - that's why the value of the degree has fallen in general. If that's your reason for attending college then you have completed nothing more than vocational training - vocational training prepares you to be a conforming member of the working class.
The purpose of a higher education is not to prepare you for a job, it's to improve your mental capacity so that you might contribute to society. The purpose of a job or career is to make money. The two can be related or leveraged by each other but they remain apples and oranges.
People who think that their college education is their meal ticket to a life of wealth are doomed to a life of near poverty and misery - because they just don't get it. And since they don't "get it" - they gained no real education, they simply punched a ticket.

College isn't for everyone, but statistically speaking, people with degrees make more than those who don't (on average), and it is a significant amount (I think it is a million or two over a lifetime difference, but journeyman skilled tradesman, which requires more education than college, certainly do just as well financially over their work lives).
That said, many of the world's richest people, including the richest man in the world all the way down to small business owners do just fine without a degree. So it's up to you. Buying houses at this point is about the same as gambling or day trading, you might loose money (an requires up front capital). Owning your own business can be risky and is likely a lot more work than a traditional job (if you want to improve your chances of success, you need to work extra hard). So it really comes down to what you think, not what anyone else thinks, and the risks and amount of work you want to do. But just having a degree is no guarentee, it's all what you make of your knowledge, skills and abilities.

Everything is a waste of time if you don't apply yourself.
If you have the money to buy a few houses and buy a business (or start one), by all means, go for it. Most people don't have that kind of money at 18, so they go to college.

If you can do that I think it would be a great way to make a living. However if you want to be in business or real estate, so much depends on your image and reputation. Street smarts will only get you so far. A college education not only looks good, but will help you better manage yourself and your business, if you can apply what you learn.

It is indeed a waste of time, but since society is so sad and pathetic it is a necessary waste of time in order to be "successful." Seriously, a person doesn't get much smarter at all by spending four years of his or her life doing additional busy work unless it is pre-medical studies of some kind. The system is a money racket, but if you want a higher percentage chance of making money yourself then you better go to college. Sure there are success stories like Donald Trump who dropped out, but these are unlikely. I'm not kidding when I say I could have skipped undergraduate and gone right to law school and done fine right out of high school---and I'm not some genius or anything. I look at my undergraduate studies as an obstacle between me and lots of money. You just need to deal with it unfortunately. That is life.

If you can do it and do it well without a degree then more power to you. Chances are you'd increase your success rate and earning potential with a college degree.
College is not for everyone. Some people are fine and happy without it. Some people need a degree to become what they want to be. There's no way I could be a professional geologist without a degree in it.
