Unfortunately, most people in the USA (and "the West" in general) have had little, if any, personal experience with Muslims.
Add to that, the fact that it's the terrorists who get all the coverage in the media.
This may help explain why so many are prone to making hasty generalizations about Muslims.
But that's not a one-way street. I lived for over 20 years in the Middle East, and believe me, there is no lack of "hasty generalizations" about Americans (and "Westerners" in general) over there, either.
And it's for the same reasons: lack of personal contact and forming impression based only or mostly on what is seen in the media.
Having known (and taught) literally thousands of Muslims myself, I am fortunate enough to know that,
as you said, it's an tiny percentage who are terrorists.
But when the only Muslims many here ever hear about ARE that tiny percentage, well, it's not too hard to see why some jump to the wrong conclusions.

I have had to work, live, and be around Muslims. I'm the ones I have had to come in contact with they are very deceptive individuals and can not be trusted. Those people do what ever it takes for there own personal needs. And there religion condones this to anyone that is not a Muslim. And as a matter of fact a Muslim told me that's the way it is.

HA! Less than 1% my azz! Most muslims think the same exact way. I was in 9th grade during 9/11 and a muslim friend was talking about it days after it happend. She said that BUSH did it to make muslims look bad! This was DAYS after. She thinks that Bush did it and Osama is innocent despite confessing.
Peace, Jesus is real and not Mohammed

It is as easy for the 99.99% of peaceful muslims to stop self-proclaimed muslims carrying out acts of violence as it is for the 99.99% of Americans who want drugs off the streets to stop drugs being imported, used and sold in the United States.
In the UK in the 1990s, "Irish people" were to blame for the bombs, so all Irish people were associated with this, innocent or not - we suffered in the same way (but not to the same extent, due to the colour of our skin) as muslims suffer now. It's wrong, it's illogical, but it's human nature to generalise.
When I lived in Ireland, I was threatened by the IRA for speaking out against terrorism. Then I moved to England, where I was stopped by the police all the time because of being Irish... I tried, I put myself in danger, I couldn't stop the terrorism on my own.
People like easy answers to questions, it's easier to just blame "muslims", or "catholics" or Mexicans or whoever rather than accepting that we're all human beings, with good people, bad people, stupid people in all races.
Sorry - but that's the sad state of the world.

With only 1/100 of 1% being terrorists, we have to wonder why it is that we only hear 1/100th of that number decrying the terrorist attacks that are being perpetrated. Where is the outcry against terrorism from the 99.999% of the Muslims who are not terrorists. We have to assume that silence =agreement.

because that's what people see. You don't see that many crazy white christians going on suicide bombing missions. While maybe only .0001% of muslims are terrorists, but maybe 90% of major terrorist attacks in the western world are committed by muslims (im just throwing numbers out they probably arent accurate). but you get the point, muslims become the face of terrorism and because your brain likes to associate things, every muslim becomes a terrorist.

Less than 1% of 1% of muslims are terrorists?
You really must show proof if you're going to make such a spectacular claim as that.

I agree with grips. Why are the rest of the muslims letting that 1/100 of 1% speak for them...and they are speaking in volumes.

They shouldn't, most of the Muslims in this country are here because of Wahhabism. This is the form of religion that UBL teaches, one created in Saudi Arabia. I am proud they could find refuge in this country and hope they can assist others within the faith of Islam to recognize the benefits democracy has to offer.

sit idlely by whilst this 1/10% continues on a steak of murder and hate.
It is the responsibility of the "other " Muslims to nullify these radicals in word and deed.
