Do you mean 26 letters in the alphabet?
In the Greek list of letters, which start Alpha, Beta, Gamma and give us the name alphabet, there were fewer. As time has passed there have been additional letters which have disappear including the th sound that looks like a bewildered letter d and the long s in the middle of works that modern people read as an f. There have been new letters and uses defined such as U the sound of which used to be shown as V and W which is not a part of French. Further, there are languages out there which have sounds not represented in the English alphabet, such as the click sound in Hosa (sp?) which is called Bang and represented by ! sometimes.
