I have a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop and every so often I think it's when I'm laying in a position that not much air can get to it it shuts down. I feel the back it's normally very hot when I do so. Does anyone know if it has a safeguard to shut down at a certain temp? Or could there be a software issue?

Yes, it does sound like a temperature issue. Does your fan run normally, or is it always running at full power? I have a Presario 2100, and I previously had problems with heat issues. There are a few things you can do to improve the performance.

First, make sure that the laptop is placed on a flat, hard surface. If you are using your lap or a bed, loose clothing or bedsheet may block the vents. Blocking a vent can cause a laptop to overheat quickly.

Second, try cleaning the fan. This may require full dissasembly of the laptop. (Find a link to a PDF of the Service Manual for your laptop for full instructions on how to do this, as you must take it apart from the top down. Use Google or the HP website.) Use tweezers to pull out any hair, lint, or debris clogging the fan. DO NOT try to turn the fan blades, the fan motor is fragile and prone to damage.

Third, you can buy an external cooler for your laptop. I have one from Antec and it works well with my Presario 2100.

If all of the above fails, you may need to replace the internal fan of your notebook.

Good luck!
