Try coin collecting. It doesn't have to cost you a lot. You can go to the bank and pick of a box of coin (whichever denomination you like) for exactly face value. A box of pennies is $25, a box of nickels is $100, a box of dimes is $250 and boxes of quarters or half dollars are $500. You don't have to buy the whole box. The bank can pull out whatever amount you like.
Once you get a box, you can go through and pull out the better coins (there are books to help with this or websites). You can pick up a coin album and try to fill all the holes (get one for each year) or just search for interesting ones.
The coins that you don't want can be returned to the bank and put straight back into your account (though it's often better to return the coins to a different bank (not just a different branch but a different bank) so that you don't search the same coins over and over). Everything you find will have been obtained at face value. You'd be surprised what people have found. Check out these links to see:

Also check your change for interesting finds.
Some things to search for: wheat pennies, silver dimes, silver quarters, old coins, error coins, coins with the "S" mintmark - it could be a proof coin etc. There's always the chance that you could find a real treasure!
It's also helpful to buy a red book. It can help you price your coins and will answer many of the questions you may have.
OR IF THAT'S NOT FOR YOU...

Reading is good, I usually have some embroidery going too. That's pretty portable. Knitting and crocheting, of course. I have a friend who lucets on the train and gets funny looks. No funny looks for knitters, but definately for a luceter (if that's a word.) Beats me what's so weird about it, or why people don't just ask what she's doing. Oh, my hubby used to make chain mail on the train. That's a good conversation starter, which was bad for him because he's Deaf and would have to stop what he was doing to answer questions :)

Knitting and crocheting would be portible enough to go anywhere. You could also quilt by hand. A project there that would be portible enough is grandmother's flower garden using quilt patis. You can start by making a bag and who knows, perhaps you will get hooked on quilting! Here's a link with some videos to see what you can make with them. They were developed by a gal who lives 60 miles from me.

Knitting. The kit is light, and can be kept quite small if you work on only one project at a time. You can knit while watching television, or talking with friends.
If anyone give you grief about knitting, then you have two perfectly servicable weapons to puncture the obnoxious SOB. lol.

Sports? I think running is good because you really can do it anywhere and I think it's fun, but it also makes you work hard. It's a really good feeling when you know you've got better at something, especially running because you can literally measure it - also, there's nothing wrong with staying fit!

Try drawing. You can take a sketch pad with you where ever you go and no one will think it weird. I have taken it even to church. I take notes and draw. I have had a lot of fun and I got good at it. Now people ask me to design tatoos for them.
