I would says that the concept of the 20th century ends in 1991 as all events from that century are more or less concluded with the implosion of the Soviet Union. The 20th is the "short" century, encompassing 1919-1991 whereas the 19th is the "long" century, ranging from 1789-1918. The reason I make this argument is that ideas such as nationalism and liberalism dominated Europe from 1789-1918 while socialism, communism, and totalitarianism dominate from 1919-1991.
WWII ended in 1945, but resonated forward with the Cold War and the various smaller engagements that dotted the last half of the 20th century. WWII is very much a continuation of WWI and many historians argue both world wars are really just one with a 20 year peace.

WW2 ended in 1945 with the surrendering of Japan. After that, the Cold War started between the US and Soviet Union. It was called the Cold War because there was never any direct conflict between the two super power. The US helped the Afghanistanians when the Soviets invaded and the Soviets helped the Chinese during the Korean War. The closest they got is during the Cuban Missle Crisis.

Quite simple. World War 2 ended in 1945 with the surrender of the last Axis poers involved.......so there is no way it could have ended in 1991. History is continuously evolving but the ensuing cold war is a completely different issue.

The Second World War ended in Europe in May of 1945, and in Japan in August of that year. The hostilities ceased, and rebuilding was the order of the day.
The so-called Cold War was NOT an ideological conflict between either Germany and/or Japan and their late enemies, but between former allies; namely, the Soviet Union and the capitalist societies of Western Europe and the United States.
Therefore, I can't accept your idea that World War II didn't end until the 1990's.

Well, technically it ended after Japan surrendered after the US dropped the A-bombs. So it was 1945.
But are you alluding to the Cold War conflict that seemed to begin to grow after '45? That ended in the early 90s (if you believe it ever ended).

Only the ones who think the Cold War was an extension of WWII, which it's not. If you think it is, then the you can make an argument that the First World war extended on into WWII....

some could say that it ended with the fall of the berlin wall and the end of the cold war. Germany was finally unified and hostilites in that country were over.
