Because serious people are better and they show that you are 'on the ball'-that you are focused and going somewhere.
People look for others with direction. In the Navy, In Military School, I was taught that when I walked, I had to stand straight and tall, head high and forwards, almost like a march.
To this day, I still walk that way. When I went to OCS in the Navy, I barely had to learn the stuff they had planned to teach, because I already had it down before I got there. You have to look professional to be taken seriously. At work, when I show up at the hospital, even though I am not a doctor there, when I walk in sometimes, the nurses and staff do not bother even reading my badge, they simply assume I am a doc and treat me like one. So do some of the other doctors some times, until they realize that I am not. If you look powerful, people will assume you are, that is why when you have the serious face, people assume you are focused and secure.
A smile is good at a reception or some social function. Of course, that changes when you are not in a business environment. You just have to learn to assess your surroundings and evaluate the environment you are placed in before deciding how to act.

Told to me by management: "People that want you to look serious are insecure with their own personalities and feel threatened by your enlighted facial expressions. It makes them distrust you. They may be jealous because they cannot push aside their problems like you can....." I've been called "Polly Anna" told that I'm just "too damn happy" "why are you so nice to people?" (they went on and on and on) I have found that people like that are generally unhappy all the time and most often than not, are slackers both in their personal lives and at work. Piss on them! SMILE BABY!
