they are the past and helped us get to where we were. SOme of them were mothers fathers sisters brothers etc.. who lived life and now deserve there last years in peace for all they have done. How would you feel if you were eldery and had no one who is willing to help and care? The elderly are weak pysically and need help in the best way because it is not only a service to then but a service to mankind.

If you want to to add, you can add phrases from your holy book as well as other major religions to justify your point.

it is a good form of charity

sorry im thinking ill be back if i can bring up some more

you can learn a lot from them as you help them as you will see how they appreciate help and are so warm. Elderly people are usually wise because they have lived life and experienced so much...there wiseness benifits the community morally. They also tend to bring families together. They are an impotant link

The best way to have the information you need for helping the
elderly is to volunteer part time at a retirement center, or an
assisted livinig center in your area. Taking the time to help
in the social areas and talking to different people living there.
Learn from them what their needs are in the home. If they
need any special assistance, or have health issues. Ask about their entertainment needs, and how they spend their
time. Ask about how often their family members come to
visit them. Ask about their families. Make notes on your dis-
cussions, and what you did to help make their stays be a little
more bearable or comfortable. Ask if they have day excursions. Places like for shopping, or to the beach or
maybe going to a public park. Ask what they enjoy doing the
most. Anything you can think of to ask, that they'ed enjoy
talking about, is what you can include in your essay.
You might take note of how many men are in the retirement
facility, vs the amount of women. Then ask the residents,
about those figures and ask their opinions of why they think
that is. As usually the women outweigh the number of men
considerably. Or so I've read.
Interview some of the staff members. And get ideas of
the type of care the average resident requires. And that includes their food needs. Tour the kitchen, and see how
the food is prepared, and how it's served. Is there attention
to display of the food. Is there a measured amount that each
is given, or do they serve themselves from serving bowls? I'm
sure if you think about it for awhile, you'll come up with some
additional questions. But first you have to get inside and
see what's happening. So talk with the director of a home
and get permission to vounteer as an aide for a day. Walk
in the staffs' shoes and see what there job entials.
If you do all of this, you'll have ample info to write a very
interesting essay of valuable interest to share with the class
if it's mandated that you must read it before a class for
extra credit.
Good luck to you and I hope you get an A for your report.

You could contact your local Alzheimer's organization. I am sure they would be happy to help you out. There are elderly people who have no one. Nursing homes, would be a good place for you to visit. The people enjoy a nice friendly face. Some could use help with letter writing, going for walks, or just someone to talk to. Ask for the program director.
There are Caregivers who could use a lending hand.
You may have a Senior Citizen program in your area, you could call and visit them as well.
Good luck with your paper. There are lots of good people out there who will help you.

Most older people are like walking history books and have wonderful insights.
by saying helping I assume you mean caring for....
and those two words are self descriptive...
Another human being that is helpless needs care.
We owe it to them.
Community service is when a governing body or non profit agency steps in and closes the gaps on meeting the needs for a group of individuals, kids, elderly, whatever.
Perhaps research on how your community is helping the elderly in your hometown.

Attack it from an impersonel stance since you're not experienced or knowledgeable in this area. Perhaps, the beginning or history of them when the state became involved, numbers, regulation etc. To give it a personal approach do little interviews on three or more asking the the 5 w's. Good luck! blessings Juju

No, banning things does not work. Tobacco is bad for you, but so is caffeine. Should we ban soda as well. Alcohol is bad for you, and we tried to ban it, and that was a disaster. Drugs of all kinds, although illegal, are widely available, and America has the highest prison population in the world because of it. If people want something, they will get it.

Recognize they are intelligent adults, not drooling babies.

Offer help only when it is clear they might need it.

Always ask before you help. Consider what you see as help they might see as an intrusion.

Always be respectful of their intelligence and need for space and freedom.

If they are in a facility because of a disability understand this. While you might see it as the best there is. They will see it as a prison.

Learn to see through their eyes.

I am a senior citizen.

Why not go and volunteer at an assisted living center, nursing home.Senior citizens are great. They have a wealth of knowledge to offer, and always glad to share what they know.

As a student you need to learn to study and do things on your own. If you have no clue about your essay, huh? Do you have grandparents? If so try talking to them.
