The mobile phone was invented by kevin Nokia of Nuneaton with his friend Richard Cellnet in 1926.
Initially they experimented using wired point to point telephonics using physics of tension and amplification of box resonance. This system failed to take off due to the requirements of always being in line of sight and the bulky equipment. In the 1990s the idea was taken up again by Robert Ericson, he developed a method of using the box resonance theory without the tension component.
This idea took off although the equipment was bulky, and it wasnt until 2000 when technology made it possible to reduce the components to a size that would fit in the pocket, this being developed by the highly sucessful Motorolla organisation of Clacton upon sea

It was used by the military back in the 1980's..
The cell phone was not so "mobile" at that time, but later the frequencies were opened to public bandwdith.
