In my opinion women shouldn't be circumcised. It's used more as a way to keep the woman "pure," and is very painful and much different than male circumcision.
I hate labelling any society's customs as brutal and wrong, without knowing the real reason behind it. For example, I worked in a museum with Native artifacts, coordinating to abide with the new NAGPRA law. I was working with a white girl, who got really offended when one tribe asked that women not touch their artifacts. She said they were sexist and wrong, and she wouldn't abide by their wishes. The real reason is, in that tribe's beliefs (as is common among many tribes), men have physical power but women have spiritual power. This power peaks during their "moon" (ladies, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about :-). The tribe considers it dangerous for a woman, with all of her power, to come into contact with a powerful object when she doesn't know how to handle it. I don't see that as disrespectful, but I couldn't convince that girl otherwise.
I'm just trying to say, don't judge customs before you know the cultural context. I don't really know the cultural context of FGM. HOWEVER, I know it causes pain to a lot of women and seems pretty barbaric and terrible. I know I wouldn't want it done.

I think it is Barbaric and should be abolished. The Chasity belt was a bad ida as well and is no longer used. Now it is used as a sex ade but this type can be taken off.Female genital mutilation can not be reversed. With all the nerve endings there are in the clotures, it is like cutting off the head of a guys pines. Some get the labia cut. That would be like a guy getting his ball sack removed and having his balls shaved up inside him.On the average a guy gets circumcised at a very young age.But for the most part is unnecessary if the penis is caped clean. Now I assume they leave an opening for the wren witch will still back up and go places where it should not go.If this happened to a guy it would end up in his testicles. The infection would be very painful..I should know it happened to me 3 time. The thread time I fought it off by frequent masturbation.

You should study the cultures that still practice it for a clearer understanding. "...just for the sake of benefitting certain norms" is how you placed your argument, but understand that no parent would do anything to harm their child just for the sake a 'norm'. Further, no intervention from a government made up of the very people who support such practices would oppose it. That would be akin to Russia telling the U.S. that birth control should be illegal because of the things it does long-term to a female's body. Only those outside these cultures are up-in-arms. Now, if you suggested that the procedure be performed by only licensed medical personnel, the way circumcisions are done in America, you may have an argument. What you are doing now is spouting imperialist rhetoric.

Yeah, this practice is as criminal as paedophila/ child molestation, child trafficking, sex tourism and it should be stopped by those communities that are practicing it. According to me there are more urgent issues to be addressed than this problem (though of course it should also be tackled with an iron fist). To be able to tackle it we should be alive first, or those we want to protect from it should be first assured of a future on this planet (other factors held constant). The enviroment and global warming should be priority number one.

FGM is nominally illegal in almost all of the countries where it is practiced. It's a matter of those countries not having the resources or the wherewithal to prosecute.

This is forced on young girls in some societies. If you want to help end this horror contact Amnesty International for donations or just writing to Govt. officials.

Yes, it should be illegal. It is not even close to circumcision. Any males that promote/practice this should be castrated. I don't know what you do to mothers. Stoning might be commonplace in those uncivilized and ignorant places. FGM makes me angry!

Men are circumsized as a way to ward off infections...
Women are to not have the urge to have sex. Women should not be circumsized. Any married man can tell you they don't need to have ANOTHER reason to tell you not tonight...
