ROFLOL, at those previous answers.
There is a huge difference in a confined city with few exits with tens of thousands of people who don't even have transportation,
and in areas spread out over several hundred miles of easy egress, mild climactic, gentle countryside peopled by a population whose median income is often 50% to 500% above the rest of the nation and has 1.5 vehicles per person, on average.
BTW, having spent 2 years working in the still very much homeless, workerless, basic services still missing (water, power, sanitation) areas, the only people doing anything are volunteers and neighbors. You have to remember, the media focuses on N.O. There is an entire coast on either side of New Orleans, including the complete MS coast line, that ceased to have inhabitable structures for miles back from the coast.
The government still isn't involved in building back, and you spoiled people are gonna gripe about helping provide food, water, clothing and tents. Most of the above mentioned was and still is provided by an outpouring of churches from all over the world and the people who did survive, neighbors taking care of neighbors.

I think we can all agree that the standard for human behavior in America should not be formed using the events in New Orleans.

New York during the first trade center attack.

New York, Washington DC, Shanksville PA, and most of the USA on 9-11.

Mississippi during and after Katrina

Minnesota bridge collapse.

San Fransisco earth quakes.

Hurricane Andrew

THE NORTHRIDGE EARTHQUAKE

THE RED RIVER FLOOD

Hurricane Hugo

Hurricane Wilma

American response to the indonesian tsunami

All these events and the response and conduct of the American people say that we and our government are much different than what is portrayed by New Orleans.

This is for the ignorant people who have posted rude comments above
Not everyone in New Orleans was given a chance to leave do you think the 36 people who drowned in the nursing home decided to stay?
How about the children whose bodies have been found, not to mention the many who could not afford to leave and were not given help.
The people who helped their neighbors to safety and did not break laws or loot, the world seems to forget about them. Only the bad made the news none of the good that came out in others was worthy of the press coverage.
If you did not live or do anything to help after, keep your mouth shut because you have no idea what it was like.
This is from someone who left in time and has returned to help even though I no longer call it home.

To the person who left the first answer....

Dude, first of all the people in California affected 1 - have million dollar insurance policies, 2 - had cars to leave, 3 - had places to go where they knew they wouldn't run into violence, 4 - a proactive government that communicated to them, 5 - televisions, 6 - no warning of losing their job if they left (the only way some people can pay their rent and put food on the table), 7 - A threat that they could see and feel for days before, 8 - low enough humidity that could sustain life for elders and sick people.

Should I go on?

Lessons from the past have proven to be the difference this time. Imagine if it were a replica of the New Orleans what would be said now.

It looks like in CA it is Citizens helping Citizens. In New Orleans, it was Citizens waiting for their federal handout.

you have have been given to admit Mardi Gras could nicely be slightly offensive to the Christian person. the place there is alot of human insurrection there is alot of organic failures--do not why there in basic terms is--it quite is like nature rebels too. i don't think of the deserving area is so real nonetheless, as all of us deserve punishment if it quite is so and it did not ensue to me.

2 reasons-

1) the leadership in California is one that will not sit back and wait for others to help them.

2) The people are not lazy welfare recipients that would rather complain then do any good for themselves.
