If you mean soft and ductile versus hard that is because sometimes it is all by itself and sometimes it is part of an alloy with other elements that change its physical properties..

Gold is fairly unreactive. Pure gold can be found in the earth. As far as physically, gold is soft, ductile, and an excellent conductor of electricity, which lends to its many uses.
