Government May Waste Anthrax Vaccine

Excerpts:

GAO said the two departments should create a single inventory system for these drugs so they are not wasted. The Defense Department gives BioThrax to personnel who will deploy to Iraq, Afghanistan and the Korean peninsula, according to the report.
The national stockpile is kept in secret storage facilities around the country. As of June, the stockpile had about 10 million doses of the vaccine—all of which will expire if not used.
"It just seems like a common-sense solution to a problem that otherwise is going to cost the taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars," Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Tuesday. Collins is the top Republican on the committee.
The departments say legal issues stand in the way of a vaccine-sharing agreement.

So instead of working together, they’ll waste millions of taxpayer dollars at our expense.

Isn’t this a perfect example of how the overlapping of different agencies waste money? Why aren’t more people outraged? Why is it that instead of cleaning up waste like this within our own government, people would be happier paying higher taxes? Why aren’t our candidates proposing that we clean up the federal government programs that are wasteful and overlap, saving potentially billions of dollars a year, money that could be put to good use elsewhere?

I'm in full agreement with you. This is something that goes beyond party lines. Government waste has long been the biggest treatable factor in excess spending. If we could get rid of it, we could fund social programs and defense without having to increase anybody's taxes. But it will never happen. The primary duty of elected officials is to get re-elected, and the best way to get re-elected is to use your position to throw money around at potential voters.

Elsewhere, such as Iraq?

You aren't even CLOSE to naming some of the most wasteful government projects:

Billions for Corporate Welfare
HUNDREDS of Billions for Iraq
Helium storage facilities- We currently spend hundreds of millions on sotring helium, something we do for Big Oil as well as all the subsidies- helium is a byproduct of oil pumping: Sorta like flourine is a byproduct of water reclamation.
There were so many Republican earmarks and perc projects in 2006, Democrats declared a moratorium on perc projects for 2007, when assuming a slight majority in Congress last November. There were more Republican perc projects for fiscal year 2006 than for the last 35 years COMBINED.

Where was your outrage for wasteful government spending then?

We have SO MUCH waste and fraud in our Government. I am outraged and I write my Politicians ALL THE TIME on this topic.

If we got rid of waste - we wouldn't have to raise taxes.

This happens with ALL past Presidents not just this one.

The solution is to six sigma the whole Federal Government, something Rudy seems to be behind.

You think gvmt is efficient?

Gvmt needs to get out of peoples lives and let the private sector take care of the country's problems.
