My Favourite book is The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.

I love this book because it is very richly textured, full of amazing descriptions, scenes and action. It is a wise book that reveals much of human nature, and talks about the cruelty people use on one another, without ever losing its essential affection for people.

The book also uses extraordinarily beautiful language, and even though it is written by a famous Italian writer and philosopher, it has some of the loveliest English language use of modern times.

It is NOT always 'easy' to read, but it grips the reader as the wonderful story unfolds, and the scenes from the book stay in the mind and the imagination.

Cheers :-)

All time favorite: To Kill a Mockingbird
Current favorite: A Thousand Splendid Suns

Edit: oops, forgot the "why" part ---

To Kill a Mockingbird - is a great commentary, along with being a great story, on the social climate of the times in the U.S.

A Thousand Splendid Suns -- a stunning story of the Afghan society before, during, and shortly after the reign of the Taliban. It chronicles, specifically, the lives of women and children. It will give you a heart for the Afghan women, just as To Kill a Mockingbird gave many a heart for the civil right movement in the US in the 50s and 60s.

I like Lord of the Rings all three books. And all books connected with Lord of the Rings: (Histories of Middle-earth, Silmarillion, The Unfinished Tales, Hobbit)
I like them because these books are great. Everything is included: good, evil, friendship, betrayal, love, hate, fear, pride.
I learnt so much from these books. Since I've read them (I read them when I was 12, now I'm 16) I became other person. I think my love for nature and wandering came from this books.

And of course Harry Potters are great books. I like the best The Deathly Hallows because of Snape. Snape made all story so beautiful. His sacrifice is something just wonderful.

If I had to choose one book for me it would be the Bible. It is a book of history, poetry, romance, and mystery and so much more. To choose a secular book is more difficult. I have different favorites according to the genre. Two very interesting books I have read of late was "The Secret Life of Bees" and "The Known World."

I've read so many amazing books of incredible literary merit, some which really moved me, and of course I studied the classics of literature at school, so I was delighted, recently, to discover "Waterland", by Graham Swift, which is beautifully written. Unlike many modern novels, it is actually quite elaborate in its style, but it works, the sentences are flowing and eloquent, and express the history, emotions and trials of the characters, perfectly.

Angels & Demons by Dan Brown is pretty phenomenal. It's the prequel of The Da Vinci Code and in my opinion is more of a page-turner. Absolutely recommend to anyone and everyone.

"Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte

It's just such an interesting story, and is very different from anything else written at that time. It's very deep and the characters are much more complex than characters in the typical story of that period.

I have so many favorites, it's really hard to choose just one. "To Kill A Mockingbird" is at the top of the list, though. Usually whatever I'm reading at any given time, is my favorite. lol
