YES, well, almost. it could have just been a lifeless rock, like a comet. not really a planet.

but yes. they now claim the defualt theory is a rock hit earth on its side while the earth was still motlen.

the object blended with the earth yet its veloctiy made it seperate again, but earths gravity kept it from completely escaping.

it is all speculation as to how the moon formed, nobody knows for sure, some claim a planet once known as Tiamet collided with another body that created what we now know as earth and our moon as well as the asteroid belt. some also claim that the mooon was somehow installed in the orbit that it is in now after the earth formed. still some claim that our moon is part of a twin planetary system w/ our planet. so lots of conjecture but no real facts. what is know is that the the Moon provides important timing functions for tides to control Earth processes. Without tides, it is believed that the world's oceans would have almost no life, drastically affecting the food chain for our planet. Science already knows that tides control the behavior and life cycles of shore and sea-based creatures. These include various species of fish, sea turtles, penguins and many more that use tide cycles for planting eggs. Mechanically, the Moon also acts like a huge flywheel stabilizing the Earth's rotation. We also know that a full moon has strange but noticeable effects on people and animals.
