Should American citizens just cover their eyes, and expect the politicians to work on our behalf?

Is it better to just leave all the decisions in the hands of a Democratic system or to remain involved and complaining?

First, we're a republic, not a democracy. A democracy would mean we voted personally on every law passed.

Second, although it's the wrong thing to do, unfortunately, the great majority of Americans do exactly that - close their eyes and ignore reality. When they vote, they usually do it by labels, not policies, and I'm talking about both sides of the fence.

The American system was set up for citizen involvement. That is what getting out and voting is all about. Also, polls, both formal and informal, are instrumental in getting politicians to do what the people want them to do.

Writing, calling and emailing your politicians is a form of informal polling and they do pay attention to the numbers.

I think it's very dangerous to ignore politics. It seems to go against the principles of what America at least used to stand for. I'm not sure what we stand for anymore. Bush and Cheney have done a lot of damage. It cannot be ignored.

It's best to stay informed and keep in touch with your politicians. You have to hold them accountable, especially at election time. There is strength in numbers. If I could take time off of work and could get a large group going then I would be protesting outside of Washington. Our future is at stake here. We are gambling with the futures of generations to come. It's not right and we can do better. We are not this stupid.

Since most politicians of both parties are money-grubbing, greedy, sniveling little turds, I'm starting to think our opinions don't matter one little bit. If we would start writing our opinions on the back of a very large check, maybe they'd listen to us...

Voting for the best 'man' that has courage to vote for long term interest of USA and not personal political benefit.
