In div 1 college ball, scoring makes a difference in regards to rankings with the BCS system, so yes college teams who are ranked should try to run up the score a bit if for no other reason then to boost there ranking. Especially as a #2 team could have a shot at a national title over a #3.
High School teams are also ranked both within there own state and nationally on play including points score, points against, etc. Doesn't make as big of a difference as (all I would assume) state state championships are determined by a playoff system and there is no National championship. Where rankings do make a difference is in High School is in regards to TV contracts, sponsoships, etc.
Power rankings in professional sports isn't that important as the championships are decided based upon a points system or a playoff system. In professional sports it makes no difference if you win by 100 points or if you win by 1 point, both are still a win.

Isn't it the point of the game, to get as high a score as possible...... this is a competitive sport, afterall..... it's the NFL, not kindergarden.....
next, we'll be told that teams need to give the losing side, some "mercy" td's... so that they don't feel so bad....

I don't think most college coaches ( prep and younger kids too), in fact, run up the score as a goal. They are more concerned about coming out with a win and limiting injuries.
Even if some of that is happening...its up to the other teams defense to stop the offense. Not for the offense to lie down on the field. Usually, a coach would be unwilling to turn the heat off until at least after the first couple of drives in the 3rd quarter.
I think most coaches get to a point and recognize that the game is well in hand and start putting other players in to keep starters from getting hurt and get some game experience for the 2nd or 3rd string. That is what makes a team better.
ED NOTE: In OK prep football, district points are maximized when a team beats another team by 30. That matters for district champ in case of tie and I think has something to do with determining home field in some cases in state playoffs.
KRIS10... OU beating North Texas was a perfect example of a team trying NOT to run the score up. By early in the 3rd quarter, 4&5th string players were on the field. Any OU fan that thinks that was a good win... you have got to be kidding me. North Texas was supposed to be better than that and utlimately that win hurts OU in the standings. Sorry you ran into some overzealous homers.

Only when the winning (score runner-upper) teams fans start acting like azzes and taunting the fans of the losing team and being cruel. It sucks to be a fan of a "losing" team. You go to games knowing your team hasn't much of a chance, your still a fan, because you love the game, and damnit you love your alma matter. Then some drunk, obnoxoius jerk starts taunting you and your friends. That sucks! But the worst is to go online Sat nigt or Sunday and see all the winning teams fans going on about how good their team looked and so forth. (Sooner fans were claiming the National title after running the score up on North Texas earlier this year) I just wish the fans would see the truth...their team played a WEAK team and won BIG.

As a coach I have had the experience of being on both sides of lopsided scores. I personally try not to run up the score on over matched opponents. It doesn't always work as sometimes one team is just that much more talented then the other.
I can also tell you that nothing gets me more upset then having a coach rub it in. My team lost 125-1. It was terrible weather and I didn't want to risk injury to any of my kids. The other team was far Superior to mine and I just didn't see the point. So we competed in enough events to as to not forfeit. The other coach still ran his best varsity players, and then ran the score in the newspaper. I didn't see the point in that. He did it to try and teach me a lesson (I was a first year coach). It was still classless.

I don't like a team to leave the starters in and run up a score, but if the second or third team is in I would want them to do their best. If the second and third teamers score then that is great. Always expect the best from your players, and never ask them to let up or feel sorry for a team just because you are ahead by 50. It is the team getting stomped by your reserves that should feel bad.

There comes a time when the domination team has proven its point, but I remember Manning and the Colts scoring 3 TD's in the last 4 minutes of a game against Green Bay, I think, so when is a lead safe? Four TD's?
I have to be careful. Answered this question yesterday and Mr. Sensitive was all to quick to report me.

Absolutely not!! It is not one teams to job to make the other team competitive. It is there job to do the best they can. Play until the whistle blows right? You can't tell people to play hard down by twenty but not when you are up by twenty. It is a sport, suck it up and take that butt kicking like a man. It bothers me significantly more to hear a coach whining about the score getting run up on them. He should have done a better job coaching!! I can see pulling out the starters, but you never ever take field of battle if you are only going to go halfway.

Sometimes I do particulalry if the outcome was never in doubt. If it was close at all I don't. Especially if there is a chance down the line of some kind of a tie breaker based on total points scored.

i think what we are really talking about here is the patsies and yes it is classless to do that, it shows they dont respect any other teams or coaches there used to be a code of ethics but that dosent exist any more and once again the patsies are involved, the pats organization is a disgrace to the nfl and should be disbanded in the wake of the shame they have brought to the nfl

positioned the JV gamers in ...combination them with the college gamers. supply them the journey and to proportion the Victory. i become a Freshman JV participant in H.S. and greatly surprised the coach while he gave me a huge gamble to play in a Varsity game. i become the only Varsity beginning rookies after that threat. you would be able to desire to even see some hidden skills in a game, by way of fact in practice your merely gazing the college and your predicted starters.

A game is a game. If your D or O cannot live up to the task of either stopping or scoring on the other team that is just the way it is. These guys are getting paid a lot of money and know how the game is played.
