Just go into the control panel and change the power settings to allow the sleep function.

Go to start, then select control panel. select power options and then click on the advanced tab.
Under the option of the "sleep button" make sure its set to standy... it might have somehow gotten set to "do nothing" or just plain power off the machine

Power mangement, select a screen saver and at the bottom you will see power options for you computer select what you want click apply and then ok.

Install everything on your motherboard CD.
like chipset software and graphics drivers.
I bet it will be enabled.

check your power settings in control panel, also check that your laptop supports hibernation/stand-by mode
