Use any cloth you want, backed with a tick iron-on interfacing if you plan to sew it on, or fusible webbing if you plan to iron it on.

I use blue jean material for blue jeans, etc..... I guess it would depend on what you want the patches for.

For patches on clothes use denim...then you can use acrylic paint to decorate...use "stitch witchery' to apply them.....of course if its clothing patches...i was assuming that's what you were talking about.
