No it was not the correct thing to do. Beating a child is not the answer to any problem. This needs to be reported to law enforcement and/or child welfare immediately. You could save this boys life because one day his father may carry a beating too far and kill him. I'm not trying to sound mean but the way I see it if you know about the abuse and do nothing to stop it then it makes you just as guilty as the abuser because by doing nothing you're allowing it to continue. PLEASE for this boys sake report this right away. To answer your second question I would say that most people beat their children because of lack of parenting skills and lack of coping skills. There are those people that beat their children because they're just mean and cruel people. By the way there IS a HUGE difference between a spanking and abuse and this is abuse.
