It depends how you look at it . There was never a person named Sherlock Holmes born , but , Sherlock Holmes was created in the imagination of Conan Doyle and so it might be said that Conan was Sherlock's real name ?

Nope, just a brilliant figment of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's imagination. He would have been a fantastic person to know in real life. I heard that some people write to the address that Holmes lived at 221b Baker Street and someone from the Holmes Appreciation Society answers them all. This is a cool site to while away the hours on.

Afraid not. He is a fictional creation. However, you are not alone in thinking he's real. The Sherlock Holmes Museum in Baker Street London has scarp books of letters addressed to Sherlock Holmes, some asking for help with solving real life crimes!

He's a fictional character, but was inspired by a real professor by the name of Dr. Joseph Bell. Arthur Conan Doyle met Dr. Bell at the University of Edinburgh Medical School. Conan Doyle was studying to be a doctor and Bell was one of his professors.
