Hi, answering as a teenager
Right now I'm going to a private school, and I do wear a uniform. I don't really like it, but I'm not making that big a fuss. But I would definitely rather wear what I want, rather than abide by a school dress code and uniform.
And I would have to disagree with you, when you say no competition for kids- really, I do not wear the clothes I wear because of competition, and in my school people still are allowed to bring designer handbags, wear designer watches, etc. Really, dressing how I want expresses individuality, and really you shouldn't judge people by what they wear, but it sure says a lot about a person.
---And of course, there is always outside of school.
And really, the main reason for a uniform in school is so that a student can be automatically recognized, and that the teachers know they are part of the school, and on days out, and etc. Also it shows a sign of school unity. But honestly, clothes are not a major distraction away from my schoolwork.
And I still have way more than 7 outfits, definitely, even though I am not allowed to wear them to school.
All in all, a school uniform can have just as many negatives as wearing whatever you want to school as well. But of course public schools still have dress codes so that no revealing clothing, etc, is being worn.
It is annoying to conform, and wear the exact same thing everyone else is wearing, boys included.

Some of the schools here in columbus ohio have adopted a uniform dress code because the gangsta types like to wear their foolish pants down below their butts with their underwear hanging out.
But I think its a good thing to wear the uniform.

they think it'll stop bullying, but what it really stops is individuality. there's a line in a song that goes "as long as i'm safe, i’ll support legislation giving those who already have too much power, just a little more", and that's exactly what's going on when they enact these rules. they're just empowering the bullies by getting even the administration to cave in, and take away the last thing the victims have, their ability to express themselves outwardly. all that, WHILE still getting bullied as if nothing had ever changed. bullying isn't skin deep, and neither is any solution that will ever stop it. if people want the bullying to stop, quit trying to make a little safe-haven for the kids in a world that's not safe, take down the protective little cushiony walls, and let them grow up like they have for generations before. and most importantly, stop letting the bullies win. if bending the rules will only give your enemy an advantage, then don't do it. and if you think kids today "dress like fools", that's your opinion, but to take it to the level that you support taking that right away from them only supports the close-minded mentality of a world that's supposed to be so much more open-minded than our "stuffy old grandparents". note that this paragraph isn't directed to the person who asked the question.

Yes, my kids wear a uniform (at least, the one still in school does), No, he doesn't like it. My older children did not have to do it when they were in school. You still have to have more than one outfit (a minimum of 3), unless you just LIKE to do laundry every night, and the kids just moved the "competition" to their accessories (shoes, jewelry, backpacks, cells etc.). It is marginally easier for the Mom in that I don't have to send him back to change because he is wearing some "weird" (i.e. painful combinations of stripes and plaids, garish, clashing colors, etc.--things you make a 6 yr old change for)clothing choice, but I still have to send him back on occasion to get a CLEAN shirt!
When I was in school they were doing away with uniforms and "dress codes". I think choosing your own clothes is a learning experience of its own. ;-))

No they don't and I agree, from K-8 should be all uniforms!! My step kids have felt the wrath of being from a poor family, now that they are living with us, they don't even know how to act with new clothes and the current styles. The competition and "degrading" peers can do horrendous things to a family who lives in poverty.

No, they do not wear uniforms. Everyone else in the school does but I believe that my daughter should have the freedom to choose what she wants to wear just as I did when I was little.

I think that my daughter would be devastated if she was forced to wear a uniform. She doesn't compete with other kids, she just loves to show her personality through her clothes. She is 11 and I would be very upset if Oceanside School District tried to take away her individuality.

my son doesn't wear a uniform yet, but he will when he reaches middle school. It really wont matter to him b/c all he has to do is get dressed. I pick everything else out. I'm excited about uniforms b/c no more long lines for back to school clothes. Yay!
