Greece is just fine for winter holidays, only it hasn't been advertised as a winter destination. Yes, most islands will be deserted, but there are other places you can visit. You could visit a big city like Athens or Thessaloniki and spend your time just like you would if you visited any other european capital city or you could visit other popular winetr resorts, like Zagori in Epirus (picturesque villages, amazing local cuisine, hiking, rafting and kayak). Some of my favorite villages are Papigo, Aristi, Kapessovo and Vovoussa. There's also Vikos Gorge and Valia Calda-a national park with protected wildlife.
Furthermore, you could visit Mount Pelion with its fantastic villages or some ski centre, like Vassilitsa, mount Voras (Kaimaktsalan), Seli, Arachova...
You could also visit Lake Plastiras or Lakes Prespes.
There are plenty more options...
You can do your own research, too.

No problem to go to Greece in December. It is just not a good time to go to the islands. If you go to Athens and also some winter destinations, such as Delphi, Meteora, Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidauros, Zagorochoria, Pelion, there is no problem, it is wonderful. These are all amazing places, with monuments, picturesque architecture, nice traditional hotels, great food.
Botom line is:
1. In the winter, it is great to visit mainland Greece, not the islands.
2. You need to realise that it will be winter. Greece is a mountainous country, despite the image people have of the islands in the summer. It is not a tropical country.

Hmmm...I have to disagree with this crowd. I lived in Greece for several years and found winters to be the worst time to be there for several reasons:
* Winters in Greece are TOUGH. The temperature can be 20c one day and 5c, with cool wind and rain the next. Due to the rapid change in temperatures people are often ill.
* Buildings are not built for the winter. I am always cold in Greece in the winters. Even inside, most places are drafty.
* Greece is mostly about the out-doors. Eating in an outdoor taverna or sipping a coffee in a cafe is wonderful. Hard to do in the winter unless you are sitting under one of those heaters.
* Infrastructure in Greece is not the best. If it rains hard or heaven-forbids snows, everything stops. Greece is not built for bad weather. See above.
* Tourist areas, such as Plaka take on a very different, kind of sad atmosphere when the weather is bad.
* If you are a tourist, it can be difficult to get around by public transport since you do not know your way around. Taxis often do not stop for you. In the winter, you can stand outside waving at taxis for hours in the cold trying to get to your destination. Last November, we nearly froze to death trying to get a Taxi on Sygrou. Fortunately a kind bus driver took pity on us and took us to our destination (this would only happen in Greeece).
I love Greece and I go there often, but winter in Greece is bad news. Read below to see the best time to travel to Greece:

Clean beaches around Athens are in abundance, but I don't think you will be able to swim, on account of not so warm water. If you are accustomed to winter swimming then no problem. Athens City is your best bet for that period. If long period weather predictions could be done, you could have the proper answer. Sorry.

It all depends what one is looking for. If you want sea, sun, sand, singles and souvlaki in Dec. you will have good souvlaki but you must forego the rest. But if you want to visit uncrowded museums, antiquities and some indeed magical winter spots in the mountains, put on your overcoat and give it a shot. You'll be both surprised and happy.

where are you travelling from? Athens will be lively and busy in december still as alot of the greeks from smaller islands go there for the winter. if you are going from uk, it may be cheaper to book flight and accom. seperatley. easyjet fly to athens for under £30!
