Morality question: a brother and a sister (both adults) want to have a sexual, romantic relationship - and one of them is sterile so they can't have children.

Would this be wrong?

It's not hurting anyone else. And they're both consenting adults. Why would anyone say this is 'wrong' if there's no harm being done?

While many answers simply stated that it was wrong or immoral, it seems few tried to explain why. I'll take a shot.

In family relationships, there is a dynamic that does not happen in relationships with people outside of the family. There is a level of trust between family members, and this trust can be turned into a level of control. Thus, an intimate relationship between family members is likely to be the result of one party, consciously or not, taking advantage of this higher level of trust and control. For example, the sister may not really want to, but it's her brother, who she knows and loves and trusts, so she'll believe that it's OK. Even if he doesn't think he's manipulating her, he will be on some level.

That's just one reason why it's wrong.

It's interesting that you used the phrase, "It's not hurting anyone else." This implies that it is doing harm to at least the brother or sister. While your scenario addresses an area of primary concern for society, pregnancy, it does not address the fact that incest in the manner you described is typically illegal by statute in the United States and its Territories.

Now the question becomes, is it morally wrong to knowing violate the laws of the land simply because the brother and sister want to?

Also, while there may be no immediate physical harm in this relationship, the underlying pyschological harm will ultimately surface. It is clear that the family unit is already in crisis if blood relations are considering this course of physical intimacy.

Because it's not emotionally healthy. Even in the animal kingdom, animals have an innate sense not to breed with siblings or parents. There are safeguards that are supposed to be planted in the psyche of healthy people to prevent attraction between close relatives. If there IS attraction, something is pathologically wrong with the mind. These people should get therapy, not start a relationship.

It's considered wrong because it's taboo in society. Probably because of birth defect reasons. Personally the idea of going for my brother makes me feel sick because we're related and im not biologically attracted to the smell, looks etc

Also, it's wrong because it's wrong and you would be condemned by everyone for having romantic and sexual relationships together if people know.

I like how people are sourcing the bible as their morality reference, looks like you clowns forgot the bible promotes ignorance, murdering in the name of "god", rape, and other acts deemed as "unacceptable" by any means to today's standards.

Your situation isn't "hurting" anyone else, but ask what is "moral" and you will get various answers depending on the extending reach of what "morality" implies and "functionality" of people's actions in terms of the greatest good.

Love and relationships function to serve as the way in which people reproduce strong-gened offspring on this planet. Your situation doesn't allow that to happen so it might not be deemed as "moral" to some people.

its how society sees it

In certain cultures it is evil in others it may not be

If it is what you are doing, I'd be very quite about it, others will see it differently than you do

all the bible thumpers will have a hard time dealing with it
even though without such behaviour Adam and Eves kids could not have propagated the earth NOR after the flood, it was only Noah's family so brothers and sisters had to couple!!

Well, society has told me that I should tolorate and embrace homosexuality... regardless if I think it is disgusting or not.

I'm sure that those involved in this practice would like us to feel the same. It's just love... not hurting anyone... right?

It is simply wrong period. It is not a question of possible pregnancy, but moral character. You would be guilty of violating your sister, a woman of similar birth. DO NOT DO IT.

they would be causing harm to others..

They would be hurting their families and friends.

In my opinion, people who commit incest need to some help or something.. - there would obviously be some deep psychological thing wrong with them if they felt they needed to be romantically involved with their own brother or sister...
