Yes, I have been where you are today. I am no longer in that situation, but it did take some very hard work to get out of that situation. You need to take control of the situation. Do what it takes to fix your credit. Bad credit makes life more expensive. You will pay more for insurance and the debt you already carry. Get yourself under control. You can do it!! Your daily activities and thoughts about money must change.
In order to save money it has to become a priority. It will never work to take your paycheck, pay your bills and live until the next check and then save what is leftover. There won't be any leftovers. You need to make savings a dedicated bill. The first 5 or 10% of your paycheck should go to savings, then pay the rest of your bills.
If your paycheck barely covers your expenses then you have two options. Increase your pay (second job, new job, education, etc.) or decrease your expenses. You can give up HBO or digital cable or your cell phone or that latte every day. Look for small expenses and big expenses. Drive a used car you pay cash for (big expense). Shop for insurance (big expense). Live in a less expensive apartment or get a room mate for a while. Do what it takes. Those things are all sounding drastic, and some of them are, but you need to do what it takes to get financial independence or at least in fiscal control.
Pay off all credit card debt. It becomes an ever faster treadmill to no where. Seriously limit spending until your credit card debt is under control.
Your positive behaviors will snowball as you make progress. First a credit card gets paid off, and then a second and then your car loan (and you don't take a new one out) and suddenly you have hundreds of dollars per month that you are able to save. Once the credit card debt is taken care of, you can establish a savings reservoir of 6 months of living expenses. Then when something happens, you pay cash and re-pay yourself.
It's a huge uphill battle. Marketers and commercials are designed to separate you and your money. Figure out what you really need, versus what you just want. Even when you have separated the two, there are often cheaper ways to get what you need and what you want (ebay, consignment shops, craigslist, freecycle, etc.)
Good luck!

Yes!! I work full-time 9 to 5, but needed extra $$$$ too. So in June I became a distributor for a company called Slumber Parties!! You know, home-based demonstrations like Pampered Chef or Mary Kaye-- but with adult novelties and lingerie!! LOLOL!!! It's great fun so it doesn't feel like I am working!!
Most distributors average $75-$100 per hour. Many are wives and mothers, and just do Slumber Parties on the side.
The market for marital/bedroom aids and other romance enhancers is HUGE!! Women want "stuff" but we don't want to go into those shady shops, with dim lights and creepy men lurking around. (I would feel dirty... eww!!) And we certainly don't want to be seen in these shops or even our cars parked out front. (OMG, with my luck, I'd run into a member of my church or a neighbor!!)
Anyhoo, I researched a few different companies and chose Slumber Parties because the parties are strictly women only, and for their emphasis on professionality and confidentiality. As a Slumber Parties' distributor, we learn to validate women's sexuality and teach party guests new ways to spice up their love lives. Like I said, it's great fun!!
Check out the website!! You'll see what I mean!! www.slumberparties.com

Yip, I'm feelin' ya!
I agree with the person who advised you to invest in yourself with education rather than save. If you can afford to both, great, but try to look long-term .Whatever you decide, Good Luck!
