The bank can cancel a direct debit (DD) immediately but often will not. This is because you have given someone permission to take money from your account. They send your authority to the bank. In a strict legal sense the cancellation should come from the person or firm who sent the DD request to your bank. Some banks will actually contact the person / company who has been taking the money to make sure they know that you are cancelling the DD. This is why there can be delays and disputes before the DD gets cancelled.

I did it yesterday - immediate.

Had an e-mail to say my direct debit had been set up and accepted by the bank - I hadn't asked for a d/d to be set up. I went into the bank - it was cancelled immediately.

The cancellation should take effect immediately, but some banks require you to go in and sign a cancellation form. Whichever way your bank works it should be from whenever you want the cancellation to take effect.

Do NOT ever set up direct debit for anything. Always be the one in control of what money comes out of your account.

Would you rather dispute something with them having your money, or you? What happens if a mistake occurs? It's not worth it. Pay electronically if you want to, but not automatically.

It should be almost instantaneous, but a couple of business days at most.

good luck!
