Real events make a horror story scary to me because they really occurred. Brutal murders, exorcism and lunatics roaming the street are real and could happen to anyone. The make believe, like swamp monsters and killer crabs from outer space just don't scare me, but reality does

Wow, did you open a can of worms!

People's perception of scary varies from person to person. What some might find as scary, everyone else might find it silly.

Stephen King is the master of horror. And then there are some people who don't like his style of writing.

I have to agree with several people that said that if the reader can picture or imagine themselves in the story line, then it really puts an added bonus to the reading material.

Sometimes true crime can be scary because the events and people are real, but if it is known that the event occurred only once, then it's not as scary as knowing that it could happen again.

The unexpected, you don't know what's going to happen next, the danger factor, wondering whether your hero or heroine will survive, so there is a thrill factor involved, you get to observe unusual practices like witchcraft, seances, and explore the supernatural, and unknown, like ghosts and clairvoyants, from a safe, distanced vantage point, and you might project your own fears and workshop them, by identifying with the victim, but in the safety of the cinema, or at home reading a book.

Its realistic nature that it is possible and probable to happen to us too.
Look at how Jamie-Lee lets go the knife when Michael Myers is still lying close by in Halloween (1978). See how the baby sitter accidentally dies in the Omen.
What makes the story lines scary is that we can identify with the characters and events and even share their tragic flaws since they reflect our own fears, anxieties as per the laws of chance and choice, of possibilities and probabilities.

good luck

The element of surprise, and any story that has to do with the devil. The Omen is a classic & is one of the last scary movies I watched. It takes me too long to get it out of my head. I was nervous for months!!!
