There are several ways of importing foreign cars. But all of them attract large sums of import duty. Even used cars attract import duty. The import duty is still prohivitive to encourage homologation and the domestic industry.
Moreover cars sold in India are usually detuned to make them compatible with the comparatively poorer quality of Indian fuel. Thus a direct import without modification (detuning and reduction in power) might cause long term complications with the engine.
A typical Honda Civic in US costs approximately Rs 800000, which if imported would cost upto Rs 1600000, where as the local Civic (same model) would cost around Rs 130000.
The most preferred way of importing a car by utilizing the tax breaks given to the hospitality industry, where a hotel serving foreign customers can import foreign cars (upto a limit) paying little or no duty.

Well You cannot Import Used car from US to India . Its not allowed . The government has banned import of used car in the first place and secondly you can import a car if you are an Indian returning to India on a TR ( Transfer of Residence) The car should have the steering wheel on the right side and meet the Indian pollutions norms. I live in US am planning to return to India but cannot take along with me my used Mercedes benz as its not right hand drive. Had I lived UK , Australia or Japan , then I could have imported my own car on a TR , of course you have to pay import duties etc.

Well, I'm in the US and a friend's family of mine tried to import one of those small electric European cars, and they paid for it, had it shipped, and customs wouldn't allow it through. I know they ship it via a ship or boat, what have you. So you'll have to pay for that and all of the fees, and make some calls to make sure it's legal. But by the end of that process it might cost just as much to get one in india

it is more expensive. you have to pay the tax for import, the value will be like twice the car cost and the transportation charges from US. its better to get from India, as lot of car manufacturing base their centres all over India,
