One that really lacked in talent but gained success because of a gimmic or image they had

ha! PLENTY of today's "rock stars" fit That bill....

But anyway, I think more *pop* acts of today & the past fit that bill too.

Vanilla Ice was a big, fat gimmick who made it big.20 years ago, I *would've * said Duran Duran, but looking back objectively, they actually did have a couple of talented players.

Bon Jovi is a big that comes to mind when it comes to mostly image. MTV *made* them. Without it, I doubt we would've heard from them after 1990.

I'm a KISS fan now there image didn't give them all there sucess. If that's the case why did they have songs peaking on the billboard charts and having evry studio album execpt for The Elder and Carnivlal Of Souls reach gold status or higher. Why did they have a single peak at #1 on the Mainstream Rock Charts in 1998. Why was it them that released the first live rock album. This made live albums from the point more popular. I'm trying to say image wasn't all that gave them there sucess.

I don't know about making it on image alone.. but it definitely didn't hurt and their success wasn't based on talent...
Gwar
Aiden
Dimmu Borgir
Lordi
GG Allin (although he wasn't that commercially successful, people wouldn't have come to his shows if he didn't do all that crazy stuff)
The Plasmatics
That's a few that I think of. And I'm not trying to hate on em, I actually like a few of the ones I listed.

I know I'm gonna upset a few friendly Yahoo Answers users, but I'd have to say Kiss. I do like a few of their songs, and they are talented musicians. But I always felt it was their image that shot them into super-stardom. Wearing facepaint, spitting blood, and using pyrotechnics the way they did was pretty unheard of when they first came out. They have a very extreme image, but a very bland and mediocre sound. It's just your typical run of the mill rock n' roll, nothing special or unique about it. Sorry if this upsets you Kiss fans...Again, I do like a few things they've done, but I just think they pale in comparison with the likes of Zeppelin, AC/DC, or even Aerosmith.

Fall Out Boy. Possibly the most overrated, under-talented band in existence today. They got by on looks and gimmicky lyrics, with no real soul to their music. Ha. Bring on the teenies.

I also think that most of those ridiculous eighties hair metal bands are more about the costumes and makeup than much else.

Mason is the first that comes to mind.
he himself is an ******* that ripped off alice cooper and nine inch nails, and he didn't even do it well. the tabs are some of the easiest to play, the vocals are poor, and the lyrics are all the same. he is built on shock value alone, and he's not even good at that. he only escalated to the status he's at thanks to the columbine incident.

and any pop act. they're just there for money, not music.

The first group that comes to mind is Poison, the perfect representative of why hair metal was a doomed genre. I could mention all the emo bands but that's way too obvious.

a light to burn all the empires - Slipknot may rely upon a weird look but they have the talent to back it up. Have you ever actually listened to them or Stone Sour for that matter?

All Boy Bands, Pop, Bubble Gum Pop, and 'dance' (J-Lo, Shakira, etc...) at the very least. Many rock (especially hair era) made it on gimmick only. Granted many of the hair bands have stuck around due to them developing the talent, but they were discovered due to the gimmick.
