There was a programme on more4 last night called opinions filmed in 1982. Basically Rushdie was sat there talking about imperialism and racism and how Britain should go through a period of cleansing like the Germans did after WW2. Anyway he opposed racism and used Blacks and Asians as examples. Today i went on wikipedia and searched him and apparently he's against the Racial and Religious Hatred Act, as he believes in freedom of speech. Is this guy an idiot? I mean ok he's againt racial prejudice, but what about religious prejudice? Prejudice is prejudice, no matter who it's aimed at -do you agree?

I think I agree with you. It bothers me tho that right here in the 21st century we still have a large part of the world's population that does not believe in free speech.

Amazing what being an ocean apart will still do today. Here in the states, we never hear about Rushdie anymore - I watch the news and read several newspapers (in addition to reading on-line) and I didn't even know he was in the US - go figure. Guess Brittany Spears is more important over here, eh?

Is your Racial and Religious Hatred Act the same as our hate crimes legislation over here? We believe in freedom of speech, but if that speech is intimidating - motivated by hate - one can be prosecuted for a crime - I think the crime is called "ethnic intimidation" - but not really sure.

One thing you're right about for sure - "Prejudice is prejudice, no matter who it's aimed at" - AGREE.

I have no respect for Salman Rushdie. He used millions of taxpayer's money for the police protection needed after writing that book, and then swans off to live in America. Why they gave him a knighthood I'll never know, he's never shown any love for this country.

Dont worry...thats guy's just a COMPLETE hippocrate, Its the Muslims ( im of that background myself) who out of sheer stupidity who gave him claim to fame. I doubt it that many people even knew of him before.
I didnt read his entire book The Satanic Versus, purely on the basis that it BORE me stupid, not only did he insult half in the Muslim world, but our Queen Elizabeth, the then PM, Margaret Thatcher, England (his host country, as he is Indian himself)and the English and Black people in general.....joke is..we tax payers paid for his protection.

prejudice can be seen as ignorance but i think rusdie speaks from a personal experience of a particular religion (much as sinead o'connor did )

he is just sharing his views - much as many other people do
it is called prejudice if you don't agree with him (often)

just so you know - i think he comes across as an arrogant so-and-so but he shouldn't be issued with death threats for his views - this is 2007 after all

i agree with you 100%
I think it should also be pointed out that this very silly man has cost the UK tax payer a hell of a lot of money because of the crap he comes out with.
