ive known a few peole who have had abortions i for one would never have one i beleive if you get pregnant you should take care of your baby but ive had a friend who was raped and pregnancy was the outcome she terminated the baby at 12 weeks but still hates herself for doing it my only gripe with it is that some women use it as a form of contreception and i think these women should not be allowd to have them

i dont understand why so many women have terminations when there are millions of women desperate for a baby

It should be up to the GPs to say when it's right, there are so many things to take into consideration, if it's just the case of baby not being wanted then yes it should be done asap, there are some cases where something is wrong with baby in this case then it should be the person's decision along with their consultant. All this went on 20 years ago when David Alton got it reduced from 28 weeks to 24, I know in that year there were less than 10 abortions done at such a late stage and they were done for medical reasons. If something goes very wrong at a late stage then that choice should still be available but not for those who just don't want baby.

I think it should be completely down to the mother to decide what she wants doing with her body. The notion that women use abortion as a contraceptive is just plain stupid. There is too much regulation and imposition into peoples lives. People who do not agree with abortion do not have to have it for themselves. That is fine but what business is it of theirs to impose their will on others. After all the real loser in forcing a woman to take an unwanted pregnancy full term is the child, and where are the anti-abortionists then, certainly not helping to raise that child. There can be nothing worse than bringing a child into the world where it is unloved and unwanted. Look at the way women were treated years ago when they were institutionalised and sentenced to a life of misery. This world is populated enough as it is without adding more misery.

You can't dictate people's morality no matter how hard you try.

What someone uses a service for and how they use it is up to them. The vast majority of women do NOT use abortion as a serial device, do not seek late term abortion and do not "abuse" the availability or intention of the procedure.

Lowering the time limit will not affect the numbers of abortions performed - and specifically not by those you refer to as "serial aborters". The consequences will be felt by those who have medical difficulties ("compelling circumstances").

Abortions after fetal viability are extremely rare. Half of the 1.5 million abortions in the U.S. each year take place within the first eight weeks of pregancy; nine in 10 occur within the first 12 weeks. Less than 1 percent are performed after 20 weeks. Some 300-600 abortions -- or up to four one-hundredths of 1 percent -- are performed after 26 weeks (and occur only under the most compelling of circumstances).
Planned Parenthood.

Births that occur at 20 to 27 weeks’ gestation also result in a disproportionate number of neonatal deaths, approximately 45% for whites and Hispanics and 68% for blacks.

Personally I think it should be lowered unless the mothers life is in danger. No one should carry a baby for 20-24 weeks and decided to abort it unless their life is in danger! I mean come on you've gone half the pregnancy. If your having money issues there is always adoption for an option. I am pro choice by the way I don't believe forcing anyone to have a baby if they don't want because nine times out of ten that child will be neglected and abused and thats far from a fair life. Life is hard enough without adding extra baggage.

Women do NOT use abortion as a form of contraception. That's a lie peddled by anti choice campaigners to try and further their campaign to try and get terminations outlawed.
If they were banned, women would simply seek abortions elsewhere - abroad (like they do in the Irish Republic) or on the streets at back street providers.

At least having safe, legal termination reduces the risk of infection and death of thousands of women each year. Anti choice campaigners fail to see this.

They have also used other lies like 'abortion causes breast cancer' and 'abortion makes you infertile' which have both since been proved wrong.

Edit: Adoption is not always an option. Look at what happened in Romania pre-1989. Abortion and contraception was banned there, and orphananges were crammed to bursting. Parents couldn't afford to look after their children.

Regarding time limits:
I think you are confusing the emotional side of the argument with the medical consensus. I personally believe that 16 weeks is too low a limit, VERY few are done in the UK at in excess of 20 weeks.

Regarding "serial aborters":
What else are you going to do?.
Force them through an unwanted pregnancy and childbirth to 'teach them a lesson'?

i think 20/24 wks is fine because some people are not financially stable and it may take them longer to come up with money.dont listen to the idiot people telling you abortion is murder because its not, otherwise it wouldnt still be legal.its best to get an abortion when the babys a tiny microscopic fetus. thats better than aborting it when its nearly fully grown and breathing on its own. and itll always be legal because there will always be circumstances people will have to suffer if they have a baby. and yea your're right people who take advantage of getting abortions over and over shouldnt be allowed.

Look at this from another angle, can you imagine a woman getting pregnant and simply cannot have the child.....I have truly never wanted kids, I did something about, I got sterilised, I am one of those woman who truly just COULD NOT HAVE HAD A CHILD!!, I know I just couldn't put myself throught it all, I dislike babies, have no stomach for changing them etc., seeing somebody feeding a baby makes me heave................opinions always go for the obvious subject, but few ask does this woman actually want a child! it must be terrible finding out you are pregnant and being in a mad panic, just think about it from another angle for once...........imagine it was you, its not like having a meal, if you don't like it you can leave it, push it to oneside!

Dont know why they would want to wait so late to have an abortion. With all the pregnancy tests available you know early that you are pregnant and need to make a decision as quickly as possible. I would go even lower than 16 weeks unless it is determined that to carry the pregnancy to term would be a medical problem for the mother.

well, with 40,000,000 (40 million) babies having been aborted in America, we need to END abortions. Not simply lower them.

%25 of all pregnancies in America end with abortion. the Aztecs only killed %20 of their babies.

Sex creates Life. I'm surprised people dont get that by now.

*and for "abortion in certain circumstances", mothers dying during child birth is unheard of in current times. the number is something insignificant such as 1 in 50,000
