First of all, thank you to the French people from a grateful American. We have bolstered each other as iron-clad allies over the wars of the last 200 years. France and Britain have been staunch and honorable allies to the US and we are honored to be in leaqgue with some of the greatest nations in the history of the world.

To the question: I think Bush won the second time because he was the better choice at the time. Voters knew where he unwaveringly stood on the issues, while his opponent, Kerry, tailored his answers and positions toward whatever audience he was standing in front of at the time. The voters were not fooled.

Also, he was re-elected because he was a good President. Despite his daily vilification from a press that is highly liberally biased (I didn't believe that until 2004), the economy is quite robust, even with the subprime mortgage issues. Unemployment is down. The DOW remains near an all-time high. New jobs are being created. Spending is constantly growing, fueled by his tax cuts. Fiscally he's been an excellent President who has garnered tangible results.

Also, he has had the most ethnically diverse administration in the history of this country, something he does not get credit for. It shows his committment to all Americans by appointing the most able, not just the most able caucasians. He was willing to work across the aisle on immigration. Although not the perfect plan, it is infinitely better than the current mess. He took a lot of heat from his own party and still supported it. That takes courage and adherence to principle.

His biggest hurdle was the War on Terror. He got it right in Afghanistan, a little less so in Iraq. My complaint with Bush is not the decision to invade Iraq, but the handling of the occupation. Saddam needed to go. He was a genocidal (yes, he has used WMDs in the past) madman who invaded our allies. However, Bush eventually heard the critique of the occupation and changed his the on-the-ground strategy into one that is showing encouraging results, even though the press and Democratic leaders will never admit it. Under President Bush, we have not had another terrorist attack on US Soil (compared to Clinton where the WTC, USS Cole and two embassies were attacked with no response from us). Al-Qeida is weakening (see Bin Ladens latest release). We are in negotiations with Pyongyang to dimantle their nuclear program and are diplomatically pressuring Iran to do the same, backed by the greates military might this planet has ever seen. This war can and will be won if the will of the American people and her stauchest allies prevail. Bush and many Americans knoe that you cannot run from radicals (Muslims, Christians, anyone) that are committed to the destruction of your way of life.

The President realized this and like another US Official I support, John McCain, votes on principle and not opinion polls. Very good question. I hope my answer gives you a sense of the mentality of some American supporters of the President's. I realize that i may not reflect the opinions of many, but the results of his presidency speak for themselves.

Bush ran his 2ND campaign solely on tapping into the fear of the United States. He talked about 9/11, Bin Laden, Sadam Hussein, and Weapons of Mass Destruction almost every time he opened his mouth. Fear is a major motivator, and he used that to gain votes. That is why he won. There will be a lot of thumbs down on this one, which will tell you that those are the people who voted for him. It's the same people who today are still saying that we went into Iraq to fight terrorism, and it's also the same people who say if you disagree with Bush then you hate America.

Thank you for taking the time to let people know how some of the rest of the world views him. I'd be interested in finding out what countries think he has done well.

Edit: The hostile tone towards you comes from the people who believe that Bush is the savior of America. Please don't judge the majority of us from what these fanatics are saying! Most of us massively disagree with Bush, and the few who still think he is great will change their tune in about 15 years!

I suppose because he was the only electable candidate. Personally I wonder how come so many people voted for Gore and Kerry- both are such obvious fakes.

I also think that Bush comes through as a guy who can be trusted. I would definetly never rely on the promises made by someone like Pelosi or Clinton- either one.

As for the bikini- nice touch but I seem to remember that people in Bali also loved their bikinis, and somehow that did not make a difference. Once upon a time bikinis were also seen on the beaches of Iran. The guy who predicts burquas in Paris in 30 years just might be right.

That would be a pity- no more Beaujolais Nouveau on the Champs Elysees...

I'm an Aussie and we don't understand either - but then, we've voted in Howard a few times so i suppose we shouldn't say too much.

To the outraged Americans
- you didn't save anyone in WW1 & WW2 until it was in your own interests to do so
- you've dragged my own country into several of you wonderful escapades that you've then proceded to stuff up
- we don't understand how the so called richest nation on earth can have so much poverty
- we don't understand how you preach democracy to the world but have Flordian "hanging chads" and crazy machines for your voting that were decided by a court that didn't want a physical count (we do fine over here - no such messes)
- we wonder how so much good will that the US had after 9/11 has been squandered by an administration determined to stamp all over whatever anyone else wants
- we watch the Religious Right (read fanatical maniacs who are as bad as the Khomeini and BinLaden) running a far right crusade that doesn't care one bit for freedom and trust and free speech
- we see the NRA and wonder why they're not all in some mental home for delusional paranoics

Sorry guys - we don't understand at all - and whats more, we know you don't care

As an English Liberal Dem I agree with you.
However we too had idiots like bibsian who voted the mass murderer (in my opinion ) Blair in a second time.
It is not all Americans that voted for Bush, there are those such as Menifreem that did not.
As far as Linda E is concerned. She is typical of the Bush (playground bully) supporter.
No you don't need marching orders from others. because you only take on the week. When last did you take on a country with 300Mil people without outside help.
As for suffering terrorism. So many people have suffered terrorism at the hands of the USA.
Violence breeds violence. No go and attack China and prove me wrong

I personally voted for him the first time because, he advocated a humble forign policy with no nation building and no policing of the world.

The second go around I felt that we needed time to let bush work out this middle eastern conflict. Its not working as anyone planned, lets get out of there.

as far as health care I dont want any president to have anything to do with my health care or retirement.

Traveling around the world, we've found that most non-Americans believe that "Americans are fat, stupid and lazy". From some of the answers you've received apparently that belief is fairly accurate. Wake up America before it's too late!

Bonjour, mon ami,

Most of us thinking Americans never voted for Bush in any election; the Bush Administration was able to delude a bare majority of American citizens by portraying Bush as a good ole cowboy who would lower taxes and cut government spending.

The second time, these sheeple were deluded by the Bush administration that to vote for anyone but Bush was unpatriotic.

Unfortunately, Bush's PR department, Carl Rove and company, was able to play upon the vanities of the majority of the American public.

Don't you remember "Freedom Fries?"

Ciao.

First of all you are misinformed.
1. Bush didn't steal the presidency.
2. What would France know about war much less the financing of one?
3. France has never been fond of the US,
4. The US doesn't take its marching orders from other countries.
5. Let's see your country suffer an enormous terrorist attack and see how you handle it, then you can give the US advise on handling terrorism.

So quick to be critical of a nation who is the first on the scene with money and aid to countries in trouble.
