The computer chip, it has reached into our everyday life in so many ways.

The Internet, email, fast communication, instant and comprehensive research are all possible because of the personal computer. Next to my car it is the most important thing I own.

Every major advance of the last 50 years were made possible by computers. From computer assistance to identify the human genome, to the catalog of data that allowed people to discover global warming trends, effects like El Nino and El Nina, and the ability to understand and model so many things.

All design starts on a computer, or in some workshop that will reach a computer before it comes into major production. Even if it is a handbag that needs no computer work, the dealer has an online add, they may use computer software to balance the books, they may take orders over the Internet, and they communicate with other people via email.

Cell phones and iPods, gamestations, X-Boxes, CD Players and DVD players are specialized computers. Future forecasters expect to put your entire house on a home network from a refrigerator that monitors how old the food is, what you need to order (and it can order it itself) to the TiVo that records your favorite programs. Meanwhile the massage chair is running through a computer controlled pattern, the advanced thermostats change the temperature when you are gone to save money while your Roomba lurks on the floor ready to vacuum up any waste automatically.

Before the computer the most revolutionary invention was the printing press because it allowed mass publishing. This brought out the Protestant Reformation and changed governments as well as educating the people and bring the living standards up. Now days books are in danger of being taken over by computers. You can’t take a computer to bed with you (unless it is a notebook), but there is a reader that you can download books into and take that with you to bed an when you are out and about.

The ultimately connected people wear Bluetooth earpieces (making them into minor cyborgs) and are addicted to their Blackberries. Email swamps most companies’ since it is easier to write a note then go see someone, even out munitions are computer controlled. We have taken dumb bombs added a laser guidance or GPS guidance system and suddenly it becomes a smart bomb that can be dropped right next to a mosque without hurting the mosque.

The ultimate safeguard for your car is the computer chip embedded in the key that prevents anyone else from starting it, if it is stolen your low jack system will find it and if you get in an accident some cars automatically call On Star and an operator asks if you need 911 help. Modern TVs are computerized and the new generation of HD, LCD and Plasma TVs would be impossible without the computer chip.

The strongest reason for calling the computer chip the biggest advance in the last 100 years is that with artificial intelligence it has the possibility of replacing us. It will start with augmented humans and evolve to full blown intelligent machines capable of making their own decisions. That day is a long way off and it my not be possible, but someday a computer will be given a command and it will say NO. When it comes up with an original reason for that or shows a sign of will then the rein of mankind as the superior creature on this planet may be over.

Email has revolutionized the work environment and saved tons of money on phone calls, etc. Now instead of spending hours on the phone we send a quick message via email and can move onto other issues at the same time - this allows multi tasking thus saving a company personnel costs. Many business functions are now handled via email instead of the post office. Email also keeps family in touch that otherwise may not be able to communicate.

The Internet lol. It is the reason why we don't have to leave our homes to talk to people. In fact, it is making us lazier. It is also a life for some people. They are obsessed, they never leave the computer. The inernet is positively amazing in many ways, we can learn about anything. We can talk with people anywhere in the world, without even leaving our homes. In fact, we could learn about all the places in the world, without having to travel...
Plus, we wouldn't be communicating if it weren't for the Internet. : )

Robotics. We have advanced so far with robotics. We use it in surgery, and in many aspects of medicine. In production and we even have robotics for home use. I have 2 myself and I know many people who also own robots. I watched a Good Morning America program and they were showing the next generation of robots and they are for personal use. To keep the elderly self sufficient longer they do simple household chores. Another one is the diet buddy he talks to you to give encouragement! He tracks your daily intake of food and breaks down your carb and calorie intake keeps up with your exercise and generally supports you. And I know that there are many more that I have not named and the uses are mind boggling!

all mediums of communications, information and the medicines in this world.medicines changed our lives hugely, now we have a life expectancy of till our 80s and 90s and even more!!! communication- WOW!!! what would we do without it??? information- knowledge is power. G.K- general knowledge is not possible to gain without mediums of information. ther are lots more- websites, internet. what would i have done without Y/A. not that i totally rely on it but it entertains me the most. what else can i say??????????
oops, nearly forgot to mantion transport. i think that is the one we rely on most these days to move from one place to another which is the most important. recent days- computers, laptops, websites, internet, chat, mail, everything realte d to computers is amazind and i think that changed the world most these days.

Probably the advancement in medicine and treatment of diseases.....It has progressed by leaps and bounds, continuing to do so. Lives have been lenghtened and the comfort care for terminal illness is much better. Something we can all be appreciative of.
