Say Person1 (P1) and Person 2 (P2) go on a road trip together. P1 says he will pay for the lodgings if P2 will pay for meals, admissions to things, etc. P2 agrees, but when the accounts total out, they find that P2 has payed $5 more than P1. P1 then says when they stop for gas for the tip home they can use thet to even thing up. The last tank of gas costs $40, so P2 tenders $15 to P1 ($40 divided by 2 is $20, minus 5 is $15). P1 says that is incorrect - P2 owes $17.50 for the gas ($40 minus the disputed $5 is $35 divided by 2 is $17.50). Who is correct?

P1 is correct.

Suppose P1 has paid d dollars for the trip. Then P2 has paid d + 5 dollars (5 dollars more).

If P2 pays $17.50 for the gas, then this will leave $22.50 for P1. So P2 will have paid

(d + 5) before + 17.50 for gas = d + 22.50

And P1 will have paid

d before + 22.50 for gas = d + 22.50.

So if P2 pays $17.50 for the gas, they will be evenly split.

P2 is only correct they said they will even the overall spending in the gas station. Before that P2 has paid $5 more than P1, so p2 of the share of $20 should reduce $5.

The method P1 says leaves the total amount paid equal to $35.
the gas station can not bear there $5.
