In ancient times, the menstuation was seen as a blessed event. The loss of blood without wounding was considered a special and ceremonial occasion.

The rituals of many traditions (including the Ancient Egyptians) involved drinking a mixture of menstrual blood and red wine to increase spiritual power.

During spring festivals in Ancient Greece, they would spread corn mixed with menstrual blood over the soil to increase its fertility.

Later, they used cloth or rags to absorb mentrual flow, hence the term "She's on the rags". It's also thought that make-shift tampons have been around for thousands of years. You could actually buy "cloth" designed specifically for this purpose. It wasn't until the 1920s that a pad with a belt and suspender apparatus was marketed. Tampax developed the first commercially produced tampon in 1936; and the first adhesive pad came on the market in the early 70s.

I enjoyed researching and answering your question.

Early American Indians thought that a menstruating woman was unclean, and set into a tent for the duration of the menses. They used cloth, rags, or nothing. Victorian women, out west and east, everywhere, I suppose, used the cloths. They had some set aside and used for just this purpose. I think, through out history, the menses was thought of as dirty and something bad a woman had to pay her dues for. It is something supposedly brought on by the apple and the serpent. It wasn't until more modern times, late 1800's that the whole idea was not considered bad luck.

Everyone thinks back in history and says how bad it was but its still pretty bad for millions of women and girls today

They used cloth rags - washed them out & then re-used them. Hence the saying 'on the rag.'
