If you are very sporty and have well-toned abdominal muscles this may mean that your tummy is held in tighter, which changes the angle of the baby's body and presenting part to the pelvic brim. In this position it is harder for your baby to engage in the pelvis. To encourage your baby's head to engage you need to relax your tummy muscles and "dangle your belly" out at the front.

The baby's head is said to be 'engaged' when the widest part of the head has moved down into the pelvis - that is, when less than a half (2-3/5) of the head is still palpable abdominally. The point at which engagement happens depends on several factors. Firstly, it depends on whether this is your first or second baby. Women expecting their first baby tend to have firmer abdominal muscles (simply because they've not been stretched before!). Their babies may therefore be gently eased down into the pelvis sometime in the last four weeks of pregnancy, whereas a second or third baby may not become engaged until labour starts. Secondly, it depends on the position in which your baby is lying. If your baby is 'posterior' (that is, lying with his back against your back), then his head will not be in the most favourable posture to fit into the pelvis during pregnancy. It may take some strong uterine contraction to ease him downwards. Thirdly, the shape of your pelvis is a factor. Some women - generally those of African descent - find that their babies do not descend into the pelvis until labour starts. It is also important to remember that a baby may move in and out of the pelvis, especially if he still has plenty of room. Your baby may well stay at 4/5 until you start having contractions. Many women have several days of what some midwives call 'pre-labour' - a time of uncomfortable, irregular contractions that stop after several hours, only to re-start (and then stop!) again. During this time, the cervix is generally softening and the baby is settling into the pelvis - ready for active labour. Very occasionally, a baby may not move down into the pelvis at all. This is generally because the placenta is lying across the cervix. This condition is usually identified from a scan around the middle of pregnancy. good luck and all the best

There is nothing you can do to make your baby's head engage but there are things you can do to help baby get into the "head down" position, which will encourage baby to engage...
Sleep on your left hand side ~ sit on a birthing / gym ball whilst watching telly (instead of the sofa) in a forward leaning position ~ go for a 10-15 minute walk every day

Hiya, you cant do anything about this, it just does it all by itself, I was 7months pregnant when my daughters head engaged, and it never ever shifted, some babies, wriggle in and then wriggle out again, usually, once there though they settle, it doesnt hurt, or even would you know it had happened, accept, when pregnancy progresses your bump does drop then its a perfect ledge to rest a tea plate on or your book rofl, either way, very very best of luck, dont worry about a thing, enjoy it, and hve a beautiful baby, best wishes Janxx
