I have used AVG for several years now and find that it is very reliable. You can set when you want it to update by opening the test center and click on Scheduler and then on Edit Scheduler. Then set the time when you want it to check for updates. You shouldn't skip getting them as this makes your computer open to new viruses. I just downloaded and installed an update and it was only 58 kb and not MB as you say.

open the control panel on AVG there is a scheduler button there just turn off the updates from there. this may effect your Icon in the task bar by making it black and white. also you will not be covered for all viruses in the wild that is the reason for updates is to keep avg up to date daily with new virus definitions.

No it doesnt, AVG updates, if done daily, is a very small download.
If you choose to update weekly, the amount of download isnot that much different, why chance it by not having the latest update.

If this concerns you, you should be looking at changing your broadband type instead.
